Then the Year Eighty-Five Began

Then the year eighty-five began. In it al-Ḥajjāj dismissed Yazīd b. al-Muhallab from the governorship of Khurāsān and appointed his brother al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab over it. The reason for that was that al-Ḥajjāj once came as a delegate to ʿAbd al-Malik, and when he departed he passed by a monastery. It was said to him: In it is an old man of the People of the Book, a scholar. He was summoned for him, and he said: O old man, do you find in your books what you are in and what we are in? He said: Yes. He said to him: What do you find as the description of the Commander of the Faithful? He said: We find him a bald king; whoever stands in his way is struck down. He said: Then who? He said: Then a man called al-Walīd. He said: Then what? He said: Then a man whose name is the name of a prophet, through whom conquest is opened for the people. He said: Do you know me? He said: I have been informed of you. He said: Do you know what I govern? He said: Yes. He said: Who will govern Iraq after me? He said: A man called Yazīd. He said: In my lifetime or after my death? He said: I do not know. He said: Do you know his description? He said: He commits a treachery; I know nothing else. He said: It fell into al-Ḥajjāj's soul that he was Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and he traveled for seven days while fearful of the old man's words. Then he sent to ʿAbd al-Malik asking to be excused from the governorship of Iraq, in order to know his standing with him. The letter came with reproach, rebuke, and blame, and the command to remain firm and continue as he was. Then al-Ḥajjāj sat one day thinking, and he summoned ʿUbayd b. Mawhab. He entered upon him while he was scratching the ground with a stick. He raised his head to him and said: Woe to you, O ʿUbayd, the People of the Book mention that what is under my hand will be governed by a man called Yazīd. I have considered Yazīd b. Abī Kabshah, Yazīd b. Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr, and Yazīd b. Dīnār, but they are not the ones; and it is—if it is—none but Yazīd b. al-Muhallab. ʿUbayd said: You have honored them and magnified their rule. They have numbers, endurance, and fortune, so it is fitting for him. Al-Ḥajjāj's opinion settled on dismissing Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and he wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik disparaging him and warning of his treachery, informing him of what that old man had told him. ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to him: You have said much about Yazīd, so name a man suitable for Khurāsān. Al-Ḥajjāj's choice fell upon al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab, and he appointed him for a short time, nine months, then dismissed him in favor of Qutaybah b. Muslim. The killing of Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim Ibn Jarīr said: In this year Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim was killed at Tirmidh. Then he mentioned the reason for that, and its summary is that after the killing of his father, no town remained in his hand to which he could resort with those companions who were with him. Every time he approached a town, its king came out to him and fought him. This remained his practice until he encamped near Tirmidh. Its king was weak, so he made peace with him and sent him gifts and presents, until he and the king used to hunt together. Then it occurred to the king, and he prepared food for him and sent to Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim: Come to me with a hundred of your companions. Mūsā chose from his army a hundred of their bravest men, then entered the town and ate of the king's food. When the hospitality was finished, Mūsā lay down on his side in the king's house and said: By God, I will not leave here until this dwelling becomes my dwelling or my grave. The people of the palace rose against him, but his companions defended him. Then war broke out between them and the people of Tirmidh, and they fought. Many of the people of Tirmidh were killed, and the rest fled. Mūsā summoned the rest of his army to him, and he took possession of the town, fortified it, and defended it from enemies. Its king fled from it and sought refuge with his brothers among the Turks, seeking their aid. They said to him: These are a people of about a hundred men who expelled you from your land; we have no power to fight these. Then the king of Tirmidh went to another group of Turks and sought their help, and they sent envoys with him to Mūsā to hear his words. When he sensed their arrival—and it was in the intense heat—he ordered his companions to kindle a fire, put on winter clothes, and bring their hands near the fire as if warming themselves. When the envoys reached them, they saw his companions and what they were doing in the intense heat, and said to them: What is this that you are doing? They said: We feel cold in summer and heat in winter. They returned to themselves and said: These are not human; these are nothing but jinn. Then they went back to their king and told him what they had seen, and they said: We have no power to fight these. Then the lord of Tirmidh went and sought aid from another group, and they came and besieged them at Tirmidh. Al-Khuzāʿī also came and besieged them. He would fight al-Khuzāʿī at the beginning of the day and fight the Persians at its end. Then Mūsā attacked them by night and inflicted a great slaughter on them. That terrified ʿUmar al-Khuzāʿī, so he made peace with him and was with him. One day he entered upon him when no one was with him, and he saw no weapon with him. He said by way of advice: May God preserve the amir; someone like you should not be without a weapon. He said: I have a weapon. Then he lifted the edge of his mattress, and there was his sword drawn. ʿUmar took it and struck him with it until he was still, and he fled. Then the companions of Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim dispersed. ʿAbd al-Malik's resolve to dismiss his brother ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān Ibn Jarīr said: In this year ʿAbd al-Malik resolved to dismiss his brother ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān from the governorship of the Egyptian provinces, and Rawḥ b. Zinbāʿ al-Judhāmī made that seem good to him. While they were engaged in that, Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb entered upon them at night, and he was never screened from him at any hour he came, night or day. He offered him condolences for his brother ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and he regretted what he had resolved regarding his dismissal. What had driven him to want to dismiss him was that he wanted to pledge allegiance after him to his sons: al-Walīd, then Sulaymān, then Yazīd, then Hishām, and that was according to al-Ḥajjāj's opinion and his arrangement of that for ʿAbd al-Malik. His father Marwān had pledged allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik, then after him to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. ʿAbd al-Malik wanted to remove him from the rule after him entirely and place the affair in his sons and descendants, so that the caliphate would remain among them, and God knows best. Al-Ḥajjāj had written to ʿAbd al-Malik, making the succession of al-Walīd after him seem good, and he sent a delegation to him about that, led by ʿImrān b. ʿIṣām al-ʿAnzī. When they entered upon him, ʿImrān stood as an orator and spoke, and the delegation spoke about that, urging ʿAbd al-Malik to it. ʿImrān b. ʿIṣām recited: O Commander of the Faithful, to you we send, despite the distance, greeting and peace. Answer me concerning your sons; my answer will be for them a raid, and for us support. If only al-Walīd were obeyed in this, you would make for him the caliphate and the covenant. Quraysh around your dome resemble you; through him people seek rain from the clouds. And one like you in piety never inclined one day, since he removed the necklaces and the garland. If you prefer your brother for it, then we—by your grandfather—cannot suspect it. But we fear from his sons, the sons of co-wives, a glorious deed fraught with poison. And we fear, if you place the kingship among them, that it will become for them clouds that turn into rainless clouds. Let not what you milk be tomorrow for a people, and after tomorrow your own sons be the thirsty ones. I swear, if ʿIṣām bypassed me in that, I would not excuse ʿIṣām for it. And if I had gifted a brother with a favor, seeking by it reputation and standing, it would have resulted in my sons over his sons—thus—or I would have sought for him some aim. Whoever has cracks among his relatives, the crack of kingship is the slowest to mend. That stirred him to write to his brother asking him to step down from the succession in favor of al-Walīd, but he refused. God, glory be to Him, decreed the death of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz one year before the death of ʿAbd al-Malik, and then he was able to accomplish what he wanted of the oath of allegiance to al-Walīd and Sulaymān. And God, glory be to Him and exalted, knows best. Mention of al-Mufaḍḍal's campaign against Bādhaghīs and others When al-Mufaḍḍal governed Khurāsān, he campaigned against Bādhaghīs and conquered it, and he obtained booty and divided it, and each man received eight hundred. Then he campaigned against others and Shūmān, and he took booty and divided what he obtained. Al-Mufaḍḍal had no treasury; he gave the people whenever something came, and if he gained booty he divided it among them. Mention of several events Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī led the people in pilgrimage this year. The governor over Iraq and the East was al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf. In it Muḥammad b. Marwān campaigned in Armenia, and he spent the summer and winter there. The building of the city of Dabīl and Bardhaʿah In the year eighty-five, the city of Dabīl and the city of Bardhaʿah were built. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ḥātim b. al-Nuʿmān al-Bāhilī built them.
