Abī Ṣufrah In this year occurred the death of al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah. He is al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah Ẓālim, Abū Saʿīd al-Azdī, one of the nobles of the people of al-Baṣrah, their notables, shrewd men, generous and munificent ones. He was born in the year of the conquest. They used to dwell between ʿUmān and al-Baḥrayn. His people had apostatized, so ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl fought them, defeated them, and sent them to al-Ṣiddīq. Among them were Abū Ṣufrah and his son al-Muhallab, a boy who had not yet reached the age of sin. Then al-Muhallab settled in al-Baṣrah. He had raided the land of India in the days of Muʿāwiyah in the year forty-four, and he governed al-Jazīrah for Ibn al-Zubayr in the year sixty-eight. Then he took charge of the war against the Khawārij at the beginning of al-Ḥajjāj's rule, and killed in a single battle four thousand eight hundred of them, so his standing with al-Ḥajjāj became great. He was virtuous, brave, generous, loved praise, and had fine sayings. Among them: "What an excellent trait is generosity! It covers the flaw of the noble, raises the lowliness of the humble, and endears the one who was renounced." He also said: "Two traits please me in a man: that I see his intellect surpassing his tongue, and that I do not see his tongue surpassing his intellect." Al-Muhallab died while on campaign at Marw al-Rūdh, at the age of seventy-six, may God have mercy on him. He had ten children: Yazīd, Ziyād, al-Mufaḍḍal, Mudrik, Ḥabīb, al-Mughīrah, Qabīṣah, Muḥammad, Hind, and Fāṭimah. Al-Muhallab died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of that year. He was among the brave, had praiseworthy stances, and famous campaigns against the Turks, the Azāriqah, and other kinds of Khawārij. He entrusted the matter after him to his son Yazīd b. al-Muhallab over the governorship of Khurāsān, and al-Ḥajjāj and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān confirmed that for him. Asmāʾ b. Khārijah al-Fazārī al-Kūfī In it died Asmāʾ b. Khārijah al-Fazārī al-Kūfī. He was generous and praised. It is related of him that one day he saw a young man sitting at the door of his house. He asked him why he was sitting at his door. The young man said: "A need I cannot mention." He insisted, so the youth said: "A slave girl I saw entering this house, more beautiful than any I have seen, and she has snatched my heart with her." So he took him by the hand, brought him into his house, and showed him every slave girl he had until that slave girl passed by. The youth said: "This one." He said to him: "Go out and sit at the door in your place." The young man went out and sat in his place. Then after a while he came out to him with the slave girl, having dressed her in various kinds of jewelry, and said: "Nothing prevented me from handing her over to you while you were inside the house except that she belonged to my sister, and she was stingy with her. So I bought her for you from her for three thousand, and I dressed her in this jewelry. She is yours with what is on her." The young man took her and departed. Al-Mughīrah b. al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah Al-Mughīrah b. al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah. He was generous, praised, brave, and had famous stances. Al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī Al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī. Known as Qubāʿ. He held the governorship of al-Baṣrah for Ibn al-Zubayr. Muḥammad b. Usāmah b. Zayd b. Ḥārithah Muḥammad b. Usāmah b. Zayd b. Ḥārithah. He was among the virtuous and most intelligent of the sons of the Companions. He died in al-Madīnah and was buried in al-Baqīʿ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah b. al-Aswad The father of the jurist Isḥāq. His mother Umm Sulaym conceived him on the night her son died. Abū Ṭalḥah went in the morning and informed the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Did you have intercourse? May God bless you both in your night." And when he was born, he chewed dates for him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik. He was Kaʿb's guide when he became blind. He has narrations. He died in al-Madīnah this year. Sufyān b. Wahb, Abū Ayman, al-Khawlānī al-Miṣrī He was a Companion and narrator. He campaigned in the Maghrib, resided in Miṣr, and died there. Abū ʿAmr the poet Jamīl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Maʿmar b. Ṣabbāḥ b. Ẓabyān b. al-Ḥasan b. Rabīʿah b. Ḥarām b. Ḍinnah b. ʿAbd b. Kathīr b. ʿUdhrah b. Saʿd b. Hudhaym b. Zayd b. Layth b. Sūd b. Aslam b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah, Abū ʿAmr the poet. The beloved of Buthaynah. He had proposed to her but was denied, so he composed love poetry about her and became famous through her. He was one of the lovers of the Arabs. He resided at Wādī al-Qurā. He was chaste, upright, religious, an Islamic poet, among the most eloquent poets of his time. Kuthayyir ʿAzzah was his transmitter, and he narrated from Hudbah b. Khashram, from al-Ḥuṭayʾah, from Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā and his son Kaʿb. Kuthayyir ʿAzzah said: Jamīl was the most poetic of the Arabs, where he says: You two told me that Taymāʾ is a dwelling for Laylā when summer casts its anchors. So these are the summer months that have passed from us, yet why does separation still cast Laylā far away? And among it is his saying: You have not ceased, O Buthayn, until, if I were from longing to weep with the doves, they would weep for me. The slanderers have only increased my yearning, and the many forbidders only increased my persistence. The separating distance between us has not brought forgetfulness, nor have the long nights made me weary. Did you not know, O sweet-lipped one, that I remain thirsty when I do not see your face? I feared that death would come upon me suddenly while in my soul there are needs for you as they are. Among what al-Qāḍī Ibn Khallikān cited for him in al-Wafayāt is his saying: I guard your absence and it pleases me if you knew of good that you might mention me. Until he said: You and the promise you promise me are but like the lightning of a cloud that does not rain. And his saying – and it was also attributed to ʿUmar b. Abī Rabīʿah as Ibn ʿAsākir reported –: I kept seeking the tribe, following their remnants, until I was pushed to the stepdaughter of the howdah. I approached covertly, touching her tent, until I entered a hidden entrance. She said: By the life of my brother and the blessing of my father, I will alert the tribe if you do not leave. She reached for my head to know its touch with hennaed fingertips, not rough. So I went out fearing her family, and she smiled, and I knew that her oath had not been violated. Then I kissed her mouth, holding her forelocks, like the drinking of the thirsty from the cool water of the cistern. Kuthayyir ʿAzzah said: Jamīl Buthaynah met me and said: "From where have you come?" I said: "From this beloved." He said: "And to where?" I said: "To this beloved – meaning ʿAzzah." He said: "I adjure you to go back to Buthaynah and arrange a meeting with her for me; for since the beginning of summer I have not seen her. My last meeting with her was at Wādī al-Qurā, while she and her mother were washing a garment, and we conversed until sunset." Kuthayyir said: So I returned until I made my camel kneel among them. Abū Buthaynah said: "What brought you back, O son of my brother?" I said: "Verses I composed, so I returned to present them to you." He said: "What are they?" So I recited to him while Buthaynah was listening from behind the curtain: I said to her: O ʿAzz, my companion has sent to you a messenger, and the messenger is entrusted that you set between me and you a tryst, and that you command me what I should do therein. My last meeting with you was the day you met me at the lower part of Wādī al-Dawm, while the garment was being washed. He said: Buthaynah struck the side of her curtain and said: "Away! Away!" Her father said: "What is it?" She said: "A dog comes to us when people sleep, from behind the hill." Then she told her slave girl: "Fetch us some wood from the dawm trees to roast a sheep for Kuthayyir." I said: "I am quicker than that." So I went to Jamīl and said: "Your tryst is the dawm trees." He said: When night came, Buthaynah came to the place where she had promised him, and Jamīl came, and I was with them. I never saw a more wondrous night nor more beautiful conversations. That gathering dispersed while I did not know which of them understood better what was in the other's heart. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār mentioned from ʿAbbās b. Sahl al-Sāʿidī that he entered upon Jamīl while he was dying and said to him: "What do you say about a man who never drank wine, never committed adultery, never stole, never killed a soul, and he bears witness that there is no god but God?" He said: "I think he has been saved, and I hope for Paradise for him. Who is this man?" He said: "I am he." I said: "By God, I do not think you are safe while you have been composing love poetry about Buthaynah for twenty years." He said: "May the intercession of Muḥammad ﷺ not reach me if, on the first day of the days of the Hereafter and the last day of the days of this world, I ever placed my hand upon her with suspicion." He said: We did not leave until he died. I say: His death was in Miṣr, because he had come to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān, who honored him and asked him about his love for Buthaynah. He said: "It is intense." He asked him to recite some of his poems and praises, so he recited to him. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz promised to unite him with her, but death overtook him in the year eighty-two, may God have mercy on him, amen. Al-Aṣmaʿī mentioned from a man that Jamīl said to him: "Will you convey a message from me to the tribe of Buthaynah, and you shall have what I possess?" He said: "Yes." He said: "When I die, ride my she-camel and wear this garment of mine." And he ordered him to recite verses, among which was his saying: Arise, Buthaynah, and lament with wailing, and weep for a friend beyond any friend. When he reached their tribe and recited the verses, he said: Buthaynah came out as if she were a full moon appearing in dark clouds, swaying in her cloak. She said to him: "Woe to you! If you are truthful, you have killed me; and if you are lying, you have disgraced me." I said: "By God, I am truthful, and this is his garment and his she-camel." When she was certain of that, she cried out at the top of her voice, struck her face, and the women of the tribe gathered to her, weeping with her. Then she swooned and fainted, then revived, saying: And my forgetting of Jamīl for one hour of time has not come, nor has its time come. It is the same for us, O Jamīl b. Maʿmar, when you die, the hardships of life and its ease. The man said: I never saw more weepers, male or female, than on that day. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from him that it was said to him in Damascus: "Would that you left poetry and memorized the Qurʾān?" He said: "This is Anas b. Mālik informing me from the Messenger of God ﷺ that he said: 'Indeed some poetry is wisdom.'" Abū Ḥafṣ al-Qurashī al-Tamīmī ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maʿmar b. ʿUthmān, Abū Ḥafṣ al-Qurashī al-Tamīmī. One of the generous and noble commanders. Many lands were conquered at his hands. He was Ibn al-Zubayr's deputy over al-Baṣrah. He conquered Kābul along with ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim, and he is the one who killed Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾah. He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar and Jābir and others, and from him ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ and Ibn ʿAwn narrated. He came as a delegate to ʿAbd al-Malik and died in Damascus in the year eighty-two, as al-Madāʾinī said. It is related that a man bought a slave girl who was proficient in the Qurʾān, poetry, and other things. He loved her intensely and spent all his wealth on her until he became bankrupt and had nothing left except this slave girl. The slave girl said to him: "I see the poverty you are in. If you sold me and benefited from my price, your situation would improve." So he sold her to ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh – who was then governor of al-Baṣrah – for one hundred thousand dirhams. When he received the money, he regretted it, and the slave girl also regretted it. She began to address her master who had sold her: Congratulations on the money you have taken, while nothing remains in my palm except my thoughts. I say to my soul, as it is in the anguish of swooning: Be less, for the companion has departed, or be more. If there is no trick in the matter for you, and you find no escape from patience, then be patient. Her master answered her, saying: Were it not for the assaults of fate upon me against you, there would have been nothing for our separation except death, so excuse me. I return with grief from your parting, painful, confiding it to a heart long in remembrance. Peace be upon you. There is no visit between us, and no union unless Ibn Maʿmar wills it. When Ibn Maʿmar heard them exchanging verses, he said: "By God, I will never separate two lovers." Then he gave him the money – one hundred thousand – and the slave girl, because of what he saw of their grief over separation from each other. The man took the slave girl and her price and departed. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maʿmar died in Damascus of the plague. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān prayed over him, walked in his funeral procession, attended his burial, and praised him after his death. He had a son, Ṭalḥah, who was one of the lords of Quraysh. He married Fāṭimah bt. al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar for a dowry of forty thousand dinars, and she bore him Ibrāhīm and Ramlah. Ramlah was married by Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās for a dowry of one hundred thousand dinars, may God have mercy on them. Kumayl b. Ziyād b. Nahīk b. al-Haytham Kumayl b. Ziyād b. Nahīk b. al-Haytham, al-Nakhaʿī al-Kūfī. He narrated from ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, and Abū Hurayrah. He witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī. He was brave, daring, ascetic, and devout. Al-Ḥajjāj killed him in this year, when he had lived one hundred years, executing him patiently before him. He held it against him because he had sought retribution from ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān for a slap he had given him. When ʿUthmān gave him power over himself, he forgave him. Al-Ḥajjāj said to him: "Would someone like you seek retribution from the Commander of the Faithful?" Then he ordered and his neck was struck. They said: Al-Ḥajjāj mentioned ʿAlī in the course of that and disparaged him, and Kumayl prayed over him. Al-Ḥajjāj said to him: "By God, I will send to you someone who hates ʿAlī more than you love him." So he sent Ibn Adham, who was from the people of Ḥimṣ, and it is said: Abā al-Jahm b. Kinānah, and he struck his neck. A large group of the Tābiʿūn narrated from Kumayl. He has the famous narration from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib which begins: "Hearts are vessels, and the best of them are the most receptive." It is long, narrated by a group of trustworthy ḥuffāẓ, and it contains admonitions and fine speech. May God be pleased with its speaker. Zādhān Abū ʿAmr al-Kindī Zādhān Abū ʿAmr al-Kindī. One of the Tābiʿūn. At first he used to drink intoxicants and play the ṭunbūr. Then God granted him repentance at the hand of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, and he attained turning back to truth and intense fear, until in prayer he was like a piece of wood. He said once: "I am hungry." Then a loaf like a millstone descended upon him from the skylight. He is trustworthy according to Ibn Maʿīn and others. Khalīfah said: He died in the year eighty-two. Zirr b. Ḥubaysh Khalīfah said: In it (the year 82) died Zirr b. Ḥubaysh, one of the companions of Ibn Masʿūd and ʿĀʾishah, having reached the age of one hundred and twenty years. Abū ʿUbayd said: He died in the year eighty-one. It is also said: in the year seventy-seven. Umm al-Dardāʾ the Younger Umm al-Dardāʾ the Younger Her name was Hujaymah, and it is said: Juhaymah. She was a Successor (tābiʿiyyah), a devout worshipper, a scholar, and a jurist. Men used to recite to her and seek understanding of jurisprudence in the northern wall of the Great Mosque of Damascus. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān used to sit in her circle with the students of jurisprudence, studying under her while he was caliph, ؓ. In it (the year 82) ʿAbd Allāh b. Shaddād b. al-Hād al-Laythī was killed at Dujayl. In it died Abū al-Jawzāʾ Aws b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ribʿī, and ʿAṭāʾ b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Salīmī the devout worshipper. (al-Salīmī with a fatḥah on the unpointed sīn and a kasrah on the lām). In it died Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, and it is said: in the year ninety-one. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān: He was among the notable men of Quraysh and counted among their great ones in generosity, eloquence, and intellect. He had occupied himself with the practice of alchemy, and so his time was wasted. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam had married his mother, Umm Khālid, because the people looked to Khālid on account of his father's standing, and Marwān gave him hope of some authority, but then it occurred to him otherwise, and he gave the oath of allegiance to his own two sons, ʿAbd al-Malik and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He began to belittle Khālid until one day he insulted him and spoke of his mother with ugliness—as we have mentioned in the accounts of Marwān b. al-Ḥakam—and that was the cause of Marwān's killing. From Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar b. al-Muthannā, who said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān performed the pilgrimage, and with him performed the pilgrimage Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, and he was among the notable men of Quraysh and their scholars. He was of great standing with ʿAbd al-Malik. While he was circumambulating the House, he caught sight of Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām and fell passionately in love with her, a violent love that took firm hold of his heart. When ʿAbd al-Malik wanted to depart, Khālid considered staying behind, and suspicion fell upon ʿAbd al-Malik's heart, so he sent to him asking about his affair. He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr—I saw her circumambulating the House, and she has robbed me of my reason. By God, I did not reveal to you what is in me until my patience was exhausted. I offered sleep to my eye, but it refused it, and I offered consolation to my heart, but it rejected it." ʿAbd al-Malik was long astonished at that and said: "I would not have said that passion could take captive one like you." He replied: "I am even more astonished at your astonishment at me. I used to say that passion only takes hold of two sorts of people: poets and Bedouins. As for poets, they attach their hearts to thinking about women and love poetry, so their desire inclines to women, and their hearts are too weak to repel passion, so they surrender to it submissively. As for Bedouins, one of them is alone with his wife, and nothing overcomes him but his love for her, and nothing distracts him from it, so they are too weak to repel passion, and it takes hold of them. The sum of my affair is that I have not seen a glance that came between me and the Sanctuary and made sin seem fair to me like this glance of mine." ʿAbd al-Malik smiled and said: "Has all this reached you?" He said: "By God, this affliction did not know me before this time of mine." So ʿAbd al-Malik sent to the family of al-Zubayr to ask for Ramlah's hand for Khālid. They mentioned that to her, and she said: "No, by God, unless he divorces his wives." So he divorced two wives who were with him, one of them from Quraysh and the other from the Azd, and he departed with her to Syria. About her he said: Does longing not increase every night and every day for nearness to our beloved? My two friends, there is no hour you remember her from time but it relieves my distress. I love all the Banū al-ʿAwwām for her love, and for her sake I loved her maternal uncles, Kalb. The anklets of women jingle, but I do not see for Ramlah an anklet that jingles, nor a heart. Some of his enemies added to these verses: If you submit, we submit; and if you turn Christian, men will draw crosses between their eyes. When he heard the verse, the one who composed it said: "May the curse of God be upon him and upon whoever answers him." He (al-Zubayr b. Bakkār) said: Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, and she was married to Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. He said to her: "O Ramlah, ʿUrwah deceived me about you." She said: "He did not deceive you; rather, he advised you. You killed my brother Muṣʿab, so he did not trust me with you." ʿAbd al-Malik had wanted to marry her, but ʿUrwah said to him: "I do not think that is advisable for you." Al-Ḥajjāj had sent to Khālid: "I did not think you would propose to the family of al-Zubayr without consulting me. How could you propose to a people who are not your equals? They are the ones who disputed the caliphate with your father and accused him of every vile thing." He said to his messenger: "Go back and tell him: I did not think that matters had reached such a point with you that I should consult you about proposing to women. As for your saying that they disputed your father and testified against him with vile things, they are Quraysh who contend with one another, but when God establishes the truth in its place, they show mutual affection and mercy. As for your saying: 'They are not your equals,' may God make you ugly, O Ḥajjāj, how little you know of the lineages of Quraysh! Is al-ʿAwwām an equal of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, so that he married Ṣafiyyah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ married Khadījah, and you do not consider them equals of Abū Sufyān?" When al-Ḥajjāj came to ʿAbd al-Malik, he passed by Khālid, and a man said to him: "Who is this?" Khālid said, as if mocking him: "This is ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ." Al-Ḥajjāj turned back to him and said: "I am not ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, but I am the son of the nobles of Thaqīf and the noble ladies of Quraysh. I have struck with this sword of mine more than a hundred thousand, all of whom testify that your father, you, and your grandfather are among the people of the Fire, and I have not received any gratitude from you for that." Ṭalq b. Ḥabīb al-ʿAnazī He died in this year. Ṭalq b. Ḥabīb al-ʿAnazī: He narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās and Jābir, and he was a devout worshipper. From al-Ḥajjāj b. Yazīd, who said: Ṭalq b. Ḥabīb used to say: "I love to stand for God until my back aches." So he would stand and begin with the Qurʾān until he reached the Ḥijr, then he would bow.
