Then the Year Seventy-Two Began
Translation
✧ Some events of that year Then the year seventy-two began. In it there was a mighty battle between al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah and the Azāriqah of the Khawārij at a place called Sūlāf. They remained facing one another for about eight months, and wars occurred between them whose full account would be lengthy. Ibn Jarīr has treated them exhaustively. During the course of this period, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr was killed, and the people gave allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. ʿAbd al-Malik appointed al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah over al-Ahwāz and what adjoined it, thanked him for his efforts, and praised him with much praise. Then the people clashed in the reign of ʿAbd al-Malik at al-Ahwāz, and the people inflicted a mighty defeat upon the Khawārij. They fled through the lands, not turning aside but wailing. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh, the commander of the people, and Dāwūd b. Qaḥdham pursued them to drive them away. ʿAbd al-Malik sent to his brother Bishr b. Marwān ordering him to reinforce them with four thousand men. He sent him four thousand, over whom was ʿAttāb b. Warqāʾ. They drove the Khawārij in every direction, but the army endured great hardship; their horses died, and most of them returned only on foot to their families. The emergence of Abū Fudayk al-Ḥārithī and the killing of Najdah al-Ḥārithī Ibn Jarīr said: In this year occurred the emergence of Abū Fudayk al-Ḥārithī, who was of the Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah. He gained mastery over al-Baḥrayn and killed Najdah b. ʿĀmir al-Ḥārithī. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh, the governor of al-Baṣrah, sent against him his brother Umayyah b. ʿAbd Allāh with a dense army, but Abū Fudayk defeated them, seized a slave girl belonging to Umayyah, and took her for himself. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh, the governor of al-Baṣrah, wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik informing him of what had occurred. The war against Abū Fudayk and the war against the Azāriqah, the companions of Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾah, at al-Ahwāz converged upon Khālid. ʿAbd al-Malik's dispatch of al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf al-Thaqafī against ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr Ibn Jarīr said: In it, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān dispatched al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf al-Thaqafī against ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr to besiege him in Makkah. He said: The reason for dispatching him rather than anyone else was that when ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān wanted to return to Syria after killing Muṣʿab and taking Iraq, he called upon the people to fight ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr in Makkah, but no one answered him to that end. Al-Ḥajjāj stood and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I am the one for him." Al-Ḥajjāj related to ʿAbd al-Malik a dream he claimed to have seen, saying: "O Commander of the Faithful, I saw as though I had seized ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr and flayed him. So send me against him, for I shall kill him." He dispatched him with a dense army from the people of Syria, and wrote with him a guarantee of safety for the people of Makkah if they obeyed. They said: Al-Ḥajjāj set out in Jumādā of this year with two thousand horsemen from the people of Syria. He took the route of Iraq and did not approach al-Madīnah until he halted at al-Ṭāʾif. He began sending out expeditions to ʿArafah, and Ibn al-Zubayr would send out cavalry, and they would meet; Ibn al-Zubayr's cavalry would be defeated, and al-Ḥajjāj's cavalry would prevail. Then al-Ḥajjāj wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik asking permission to enter the sanctuary and besiege Ibn al-Zubayr, for his strength had waned and most of his companions had dispersed from him. He asked him also to reinforce him with additional men. ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to Ṭāriq b. ʿAmr ordering him to join al-Ḥajjāj with the men he had. Ṭāriq was governing al-Madīnah for ʿAbd al-Malik, and ʿAbd al-Malik had ordered him to remain at Wādī al-Qurā with the army of al-Madīnah and others that he had. He had about five thousand men, of whom three thousand were from Syria. Al-Ḥajjāj departed from al-Ṭāʾif and halted at Biʾr Maymūn, and besieged Ibn al-Zubayr at the mosque. When Dhū al-Ḥijjah entered, al-Ḥajjāj led the people in the pilgrimage in this year, he and his companions wearing weapons while standing at ʿArafāt, and likewise at the other sacred sites thereafter. Ibn al-Zubayr was under siege and was unable to perform the pilgrimage this year; rather, he sacrificed sacrificial camels on the Day of Sacrifice. Likewise, many of those with him were unable to perform the pilgrimage, and many of those with al-Ḥajjāj and Ṭāriq b. ʿAmr were unable to circumambulate the House. They remained in their state of consecration without attaining the second release. Al-Ḥajjāj and his companions were encamped between al-Ḥajūn and Biʾr Maymūn. Indeed, to God we belong and to Him we return. The pledge of allegiance of ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim and his killing Ibn Jarīr said: In this year, ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim, the governor of Khurāsān, summoning him to pledge allegiance to him, granting him Khurāsān for seven years. When the letter reached him, he said to the messenger: "Did Abū al-Dhibbān send you? By God, were it not that messengers are not killed, I would kill you. But eat your letter." So he ate it. ʿAbd al-Malik sent to Bukayr b. Wishāḥ, Ibn Khāzim's deputy over Marw, promising him the governorship of Khurāsān if he deposed ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim. So he deposed him. Ibn Khāzim came to him and fought him, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim was killed in the battle. A man called Wakīʿ b. ʿUmayrah killed him, though others had helped him. Wakīʿ sat upon his chest while he still had a flicker of life. He tried to rise but could not. Wakīʿ kept saying: "O vengeance for Duwaylah"—meaning his brother—for Duwaylah had been killed by Ibn Khāzim. Then Ibn Khāzim spat in Wakīʿ's face. Wakīʿ said: "I have not seen anyone with more saliva than him in that state." Abū Hubayrah, when he mentioned this, would say: "This, by God, is true valor." Ibn Khāzim said to him: "Woe to you! Will you kill me for your brother? May God curse you. Will you kill the ram of Muḍar for your brother, the uncircumcised one, who was not worth a handful of dust?" Or he said: "of date stones." They said: He struck off his head. Bukayr b. Wishāḥ approached and wanted to take the head, but Baḥīr b. Warqāʾ prevented him from doing so. Bukayr b. Wishāḥ struck him with a mace and fettered him, then took the head and sent it to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. He wrote to him of victory and triumph and the killing of ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim. ʿAbd al-Malik rejoiced greatly at that and wrote to Bukayr b. Wishāḥ confirming him as deputy over Khurāsān. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān's appointment of Ṭāriq b. ʿAmr as governor of al-Madīnah In this year, al-Madīnah was taken from the deputies of Ibn al-Zubayr, and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān appointed as governor there Ṭāriq b. ʿAmr, whom he had sent as reinforcement to al-Ḥajjāj against Ibn al-Zubayr. Biography of ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim This is the biography of Ibn Khāzim. He was ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim b. Asmāʾ al-Sulamī, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Baṣrī, governor of Khurāsān, one of the renowned brave men and praiseworthy horsemen. Our shaykh, the ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Ḥajjāj al-Mizzī, said in his Tahdhīb: "It is said that he had companionship [of the Prophet]. He narrated from the Prophet ﷺ concerning the black turban. It is in Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī, but they did not name him. Narrated from him: Saʿd b. ʿUthmān al-Rāzī and Saʿīd b. al-Azraq. Abū Bishr al-Dūlābī narrated that he was killed in the year seventy-one, and it is also said in the year eighty-seven. But this latter statement is worthless." End of what our shaykh mentioned in al-Tahdhīb. The ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Athīr mentioned him in al-Ghābah fī Asmāʾ al-Ṣaḥābah and said: "ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim b. Asmāʾ b. al-Ṣalt b. Ḥabīb b. Ḥārithah b. Hilāl b. Simāk b. ʿAwf b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. Buhthah b. Sulaym b. Manṣūr, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sulamī, governor of Khurāsān, a famous brave man and renowned hero. Narrated from him: Saʿīd b. al-Azraq and Saʿd b. ʿUthmān. It is said that he had companionship [of the Prophet]. He conquered Sarkhas, and he was governor of Khurāsān during the fitnah of Ibn al-Zubayr. The first time he governed it was in the year sixty-four, after the death of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah and his son Muʿāwiyah. Many wars occurred for him there until his authority was established. We have treated his reports exhaustively in the book al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh. He was killed in the year seventy-one in Khurāsān." Thus he said that he was killed in the year seventy-one. Likewise our shaykh related from al-Dūlābī, and similarly I saw in the Tārīkh of our shaykh Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Dhahabī. But what Ibn Jarīr mentioned in the course of his Tārīkh is that he was killed in the year seventy-two. Ibn Jarīr said: Some claimed that he was only killed after the killing of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, and that ʿAbd al-Malik sent the head of Ibn al-Zubayr to Ibn Khāzim, summoning him to obedience and granting him Khurāsān for ten years. When Ibn Khāzim saw the head of Ibn al-Zubayr, he swore that he would never give him obedience, and he called for a basin and washed the head of Ibn al-Zubayr—and God knows best—and fed the letter to the messenger who had brought it, saying: "Were you not a messenger, I would strike your neck." Some said: Rather, he cut off his hands and feet and struck his neck. The governors of the garrison cities The governor over al-Madīnah was Ṭāriq, for ʿAbd al-Malik; over al-Kūfah, Bishr b. Marwān; over its judiciary, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah; over al-Baṣrah, Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh; over its judiciary, Hishām b. Hubayrah; over Khurāsān, according to some, Bukayr b. Wassāj; according to others, ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim. Account of an incident involving Ṭāriq b. ʿAmr and Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib From ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn ؓ, who said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān appointed over us Ṭāriq, the client of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ. ʿAlī said: I went to Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr, and Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf and said: "Come with us to this man to greet him, so that we may ward off harm from ourselves." He said: We came to him and greeted him, and he seated us with him. Then he said to us: "Which of you is Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib?" Al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad spoke to him and said: "May God set you aright, the governors have excused Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib from coming to them, and he has bound himself to the mosque, never leaving it." He said: "He disdains to come to me? By God, I shall surely kill him; by God, I shall surely kill him; by God, I shall surely kill him"—three times. Al-Qāsim said: The gathering became distressing for us until we rose. I went to the mosque and looked about, and there was Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib sitting at his pillar. I entered upon him and told him what had happened, and I said to him: "I think you should leave this very hour for Makkah, perform the ʿumrah, and stay there." He said: "No intention for that has occurred to me, and the deeds most beloved to me are those I intend." I said to him: "Then I think you should go out to one of the dwellings of your brothers and stay there until we see what becomes of the man." He said: "Then what shall I do about this caller who calls me five times every day and night? By God, whenever he calls me, I shall answer him in whatever state I am." I said to him: "Then I think you should rise from this seat of yours and sit by one of these pillars, for if you are sought, you will be sought at your pillar." He said: "And why should I rise from this place of mine, in which God has given me well-being for so-and-so many years?" [I said to him: "May God have mercy on you, do you not fear for yourself as people fear?" He said to me:] "By God, I do not swear falsely by God; I have feared nothing but Him." I said to him: "Then with what shall I leave you, may God have mercy on you? You have distressed me." He said: "You leave with good. I ask God the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to make him forget mention of me." He said: I departed from him and began asking day after day [whether there was any news in the mosque], and I was told nothing but good. He said: He remained governor over us for a year, not mentioning him nor having him cross his mind, until, when he was dismissed and was at Wādī al-Qurā, five stages from al-Madīnah, he said to his servant while the servant was performing his ablution: "Woe to you! Stop. What disgrace from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, from al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, from Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh, and from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān! I swore before them three oaths that I would surely kill Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib. By God, I did not remember him until this very hour of mine." His servant said to him: "O my master, will you permit me to speak to you?" He said: "Yes." He said: "What God willed for you is better than what you willed for yourself, since He made you forget mention of him." He said to him: "Go, for you are free."
