Muḥammad b. ʿArafah said: No one had assumed the caliphate before al-Hādī at his age, because he was a youth, and he loved literature and its people and gave generously for it. ʿĪsā b. Dāb used to sit with him, and he was the most literary of the people of the Hijaz and the sweetest in expression. He enjoyed favor with al-Hādī, who said to him: "I have never found you tedious by day or night, and whenever you were absent from my sight, I wished to see no one but you." He ordered thirty thousand dinars for him. When Ibn Dāb arose in the morning, he sent his steward to demand the money. The steward met the chamberlain and conveyed his message to him, and he informed him that this was not within his authority and that it required a written order. Ibn Dāb held back. While al-Hādī was in a belvedere of his, he looked at Ibn Dāb, who had approached without a servant. He said to Ibrāhīm al-Ḥuddānī: "Do you not see Ibn Dāb? His condition has not changed, and he has not dressed up for us, although we granted him a gift yesterday to see its effect on him." Ibrāhīm said to him: "If the Commander of the Faithful commands me, I will hint to him about this." He said: "No, he knows his own affair better." Ibn Dāb entered and began his conversation until al-Hādī brought up something about his situation. He said: "I see your garment is washed, and this is winter that requires wearing new and soft clothes." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, my means fall short of what I need." He said: "How is that, when we have already sent you from our bounty what would set your affairs aright?" He said: "It has not reached me." He called for the keeper of the privy treasury and said: "Hasten to give him thirty thousand dinars this very hour." It was carried before him. Al-Mufaḍḍal b. Muḥammad b. He said: "The poet's saying: He sleeps with one of his two eyes and guards with the other against fates, so he is wakeful and slumbering." He said: "This did not come to your tongue except to take the ring." He threw it to him. Umm Jaʿfar bought it for one thousand six hundred dinars and sent it back to him, saying: "I saw that you admired it." Al-Ḍabbī picked it up and said: "Take it and take the dinars, for we do not give something and then take it back." Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥarbī the ascetic Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥarbī the ascetic. Ibrāhīm b. Shabīb b. Shaybah said: We used to sit together on Fridays. A man came wearing a single garment wrapped around him, and he sat with us. He posed a question, and we continued discussing jurisprudence until we departed. Then he came to us the next Friday, and we answered him and asked him about his dwelling. He said: "I live in al-Kharībah." We asked about his kunyah, and he said: "Abū ʿAbd Allāh." We desired to sit with him and considered our gathering a gathering of jurisprudence. We continued in this for a time, then he stopped coming to us. We said to one another: "What is our situation? Our gathering was flourishing with Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and now his absence makes us lonely." We promised one another that when morning came we would go to al-Kharībah and ask about him. We came to al-Kharībah, and we were a number of people. We felt shy to ask about Abū ʿAbd Allāh. We saw children returning from school and said: "Abū ʿAbd Allāh?" They said: "Perhaps they mean the fisherman." We said: "Yes." They said: "This is his time now; he will come." We sat waiting for him, and behold, he approached wearing a rag as a waist-wrapper, with a rag on his shoulder, carrying some slaughtered birds and some live birds. When he saw us, he smiled at us and said: "What brought you?" We said: "We missed you. You used to fill our gathering. What kept you from us?" He said: "I will be truthful with you. We had a neighbor from whom I used to borrow every day the garment in which I came to you. He was a stranger, and he departed for his homeland. I had no garment in which to come to you. Would you like to enter the house and eat from what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has provided?" Some of us said to others: "Enter his house." He came to the door, gave the greeting of peace, prayed a little, then entered. He permitted us, and we entered. He had brought pieces of reed mats and spread them for us, and we sat. He went in to the woman, handed her the slaughtered birds, took the live birds, and said: "I will come to you, Allah willing, shortly." He went to the market, sold them, and bought bread for us. He came back, and the woman had prepared and cooked that bird. He served us bread and the bird meat, and we ate. He kept getting up to bring us salt and water. Whenever he got up, some of us said to others: "Have you ever seen the like of this? Won't you change his condition, while you are the leaders of the people of Basra?!" One of them said: "I owe five hundred." Another said: "I owe three hundred." And this one said and that one said. Some of them guaranteed to collect for him from others. The amount collected for him in the reckoning reached five thousand dirhams. They said: "Let us go and bring him this money and ask him to change what he is in." We arose and departed as we were, riding. We passed by al-Mirbad, and behold, Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, the governor of Basra, was sitting in a belvedere of his. He said: "O boy, bring me Ibrāhīm b. Shabīb b. Shaybah from among the group." I came and entered upon him. He asked me about our story and where we were coming from. I told him the truth. He said: "I will precede you in doing good to him. O boy, bring me a purse of dirhams." It was brought, and he said: "Carry this purse with this man until he delivers it to the one we have ordered." I rejoiced, then I hurried off. When I reached the door, I gave the greeting of peace, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh answered me. Then he came out to me. When he saw the bedding and the purse on his shoulder, it was as if I had thrown ashes in his face. He turned to me with a different face than before and said: "What is it between me and you? Do you want to tempt me?" I said: "O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, sit until I inform you. The story is such and such—and he is, as you know, one of the tyrants, meaning Muḥammad b. Sulaymān—and if he had ordered me to place it wherever I saw fit, I would have returned to him and told him that I had placed it. So, by Allah, by Allah, have regard for yourself." He grew even more angry with me, got up, entered his house, and slammed the door in my face. I kept going back and forth, not knowing what to say to the governor. Then I found no alternative but to tell the truth. I came and informed him of the news. He said: "A Ḥarūrī, by Allah! O boy, bring me the sword." The sword was brought, and he said: Take this man's hand until he takes you to this man, and when he comes out to you, strike his neck and bring me his head. Ibrāhīm said: I said: May God keep the amīr righteous: God, God! By God, we have seen a man who is not one of the Khawārij, but I will go and bring him to you—intending by that only to ransom him. He said: Then guarantee him to me. So I went until I came to the door and greeted. There was the woman moaning and weeping; then she opened the door and hid herself and gave permission, so I entered. She said: What is your business with Abū ʿAbd Allāh? I said: What is his condition? She said: He entered, inclined to the well, drew water from it, performed ablution, then prayed. Then I heard him say: O God, take me to You and do not tempt me. Then he stretched out while saying that, and I reached him when he had passed away; there he is, dead. I said: O woman, we have a strange story, so do not speak anything about him. I came to Muḥammad b. Sulaymān and told him the news, and he said: I shall ride and pray over this man. He said: His news spread in al-Baṣrah, and the amīr and the generality of the people of al-Baṣrah attended him—may God have mercy on him.
