ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَسِتِّينَ عَزْلِ حَمْزَةَ وَوِلَايَةِ مُصْعَبٍ الْبَصْرَةَ وَفِي سنة ثمان وستين رَدَّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَخَاهُ مُصْعَبًا إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ. وَقِيلَ: كَانَ سَبَبُ عَزْلِهِ حَمْزَةَ أَنَّهُ قَصَّرَ بِالْأَشْرَافِ وَبَسَطَ يَدَهُ، فَفَزِعُوا إِلَى مَالِكِ بْنِ مِسْمَعٍ، فَضَرَبَ خَيْمَتَهُ عَلَى الْجِسْرِ، ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى حَمْزَةَ: الْحَقْ بِأَبِيكَ. وَأَخْرَجَهُ عَنِ الْبَصْرَةِ، فَقَالَ الْعُدَيْلُ الْعِجْلِيُّ: إِذَا مَا خَشِينَا مِنْ أَمِيرٍ ظُلَامَةً دَعَوْنَا أَبَا سُفْيَانَ يَوْمًا فَعَسْكَرَا وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ جَابِرَ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ الزُّهْرِيَّ، وَعَزَلَ عَنْهَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْأَشْعَثِ ; لِكَوْنِهِ ضَرَبَ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ سِتِّينَ سَوْطًا، فَإِنَّهُ أَرَادَ مِنْهُ أَنْ يُبَايِعَ لِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَامْتَنَعَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَضَرَبَهُ فَعَزَلَهُ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ
Translation
✧ Then the year sixty-eight began. The dismissal of Hamzah and the appointment of Mus'ab over al-Basrah In the year sixty-eight, 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr sent his brother Mus'ab back to Iraq. It was said that the reason for his dismissal of Hamzah was that he had been remiss towards the nobles and had been too liberal with his hand, so they took refuge with Malik b. Misma', who pitched his tent on the bridge, then sent to Hamzah: 'Join your father,' and expelled him from al-Basrah. Al-'Udayl al-'Ijli said: When we fear injustice from a governor, we call upon Abu Sufyan one day and he encamps. He appointed Jabir b. al-Aswad al-Zuhri over al-Madinah and dismissed 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Ash'ath from it because he had struck Sa'id b. al-Musayyab sixty lashes, for he had wanted him to pledge allegiance to Ibn al-Zubayr, but he refused, so he struck him, and Ibn al-Zubayr dismissed him.
