Translation

✧ The pledge of allegiance of al-Muthannā al-ʿAbdī to al-Mukhtār in al-Baṣrah. Ibn Jarīr said: In the year sixty-six, al-Mukhtār sent al-Muthannā b. Mukharribah al-ʿAbdī to al-Baṣrah to call to him whoever he could of its people. He entered it and built therein a mosque in which his people gathered to him, and he began calling to al-Mukhtār. Then he came to the City of Provision (Madīnat al-Rizq) and encamped beside it. Al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Qubāʿ—and he was governor of al-Baṣrah before he was replaced by Muṣʿab—sent against him an army with ʿAbbād b. al-Ḥuṣayn, chief of the shurṭah, and Qays b. al-Haytham. They fought him and seized the city from him, and his companions were routed. Banū ʿAbd al-Qays had stood in support of them, so he sent the army against them. They sent to him, and he sent al-Aḥnaf b. Qays and ʿAmr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Makhzūmī to make peace between the people, and Mālik b. Mismaʿ assisted them. So the people held back from one another, and he returned to al-Mukhtār with a small band of his companions, fettered, defeated, and despoiled, and he informed al-Mukhtār of what had occurred of the peace at the hands of al-Aḥnaf and others of those commanders. Al-Mukhtār was hopeful regarding them and wrote to them to enter with him into the matter in which he was engaged. His letter to al-Aḥnaf b. Qays was: From al-Mukhtār to al-Aḥnaf b. Qays and those with him: So peace be upon you. To proceed: Woe to the mother of Rabīʿah from Muḍar! Indeed al-Aḥnaf leads his people to Saqar, where he cannot bring them to the source. And indeed I do not possess for you what has been inscribed in destiny. It has reached me that you call me a liar, but prophets before me were called liars, and I am no better than them. And Ibn Jarīr said with his chain from al-Shaʿbī, who said: I entered al-Baṣrah and sat in a circle in which al-Aḥnaf b. Qays was present. Some of the people said: Who are you? I said: A man from the people of al-Kūfah. He said: You are clients (mawālī) of ours. I said: How so? He said: We have rescued you from the hands of your slaves, from the companions of al-Mukhtār. I said: Do you know what an old man of Hamdān said concerning us and you? Al-Aḥnaf said: And what did he say? I said: He said: Do you boast that you killed slaves, and once routed the family of ʿAzal? So if you vie with us in glory, then remember what we did to you on the Day of the Camel— between an elder dyeing his beard and a fair, radiant youth, trailing robes. He came to us striding in a coat of mail, and we slaughtered him in the forenoon as a lamb is slaughtered. We pardoned, and you forgot our pardon, and you disbelieved the greatest blessing of God. And you killed, for Ḥusayn, some of them as a substitute for your own people—an evil substitute. He said: So al-Aḥnaf became angry and said: O boy, bring the scroll. A scroll was brought in which was: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. From al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd to al-Aḥnaf b. Qays. To proceed: Woe to the mother of Rabīʿah from Muḍar! For indeed al-Aḥnaf leads his people to Saqar, where they have no power over the source. It has reached me that you call me a liar, but if I am called a liar, messengers before me were called liars, and I am no better than them. Then al-Aḥnaf said: This is from us or from you.
