✧ Mention of the notable figures who died in this year: Sulaymān b. Ṣurad al-Khuzāʿī, Abū Muṭarrif al-Kūfī. Sulaymān b. Ṣurad al-Khuzāʿī, Abū Muṭarrif al-Kūfī, was a noble, eminent companion, devout and ascetic. He related from the Prophet ﷺ hadiths in the “two Ṣaḥīḥs” and elsewhere. And from Muḥammad b. Jarīr, from his authorities, he said: Sulaymān b. Ṣurad embraced Islam and accompanied the Prophet ﷺ. His name was Yasār, and when he embraced Islam, the Messenger of God ﷺ named him Sulaymān. He settled in Kufa when the Muslims settled there, and he witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī ؓ. He was one of those in whose house the Shīʿa used to gather to pledge allegiance to al-Ḥusayn, and he wrote to al-Ḥusayn among those who wrote urging him to come to Iraq. When he came there, they abandoned him, and he was killed at Karbalāʾ. These people considered that they had been the cause of his coming, and that they had failed him until he and his household were killed. They regretted what they had done, then gathered in this army and called their army the Army of the Penitents, and they named Sulaymān b. Ṣurad commander of the Penitents. Sulaymān ؓ was killed in this encounter at ʿAyn al-Warda in the year sixty-five. It is also said: in the year sixty-seven. The former is more correct. His age on the day he was killed was ninety-three years, may God have mercy on him. Al-Musayyab b. Najaba b. Rabīʿa al-Fazārī. As for al-Musayyab b. Najaba b. Rabīʿa al-Fazārī, he came with Khālid b. al-Walīd from Iraq and witnessed the conquest of Damascus, then returned to Iraq and witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī and other battles. He was one of the leading figures who went out seeking vengeance for the blood of al-Ḥusayn ؓ. His head and the head of Sulaymān b. Ṣurad were carried to Marwān b. al-Ḥakam after the battle. Jamīl b. Maʿmar. Jamīl b. Maʿmar—it is also said: Ibn ʿAbd Allāh—b. Maʿmar b. al-Ḥārith b. Ẓabyān: He saw Buthayna when he was a young boy and fell in love with her. They were both from Banū ʿUdhra. Buthayna was given the kunya Umm ʿAbd al-Malik. When he grew up, he sought her hand, but he was refused. He composed poetry about her, and he used to visit her and she used to visit him. Their dwellings were in Wādī al-Qurā. Her family assembled a group to seize him, and Buthayna informed him, so he hid and satirized her people. They sought redress against him from Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, who was then governor of Madinah on behalf of Muʿāwiya. He vowed to cut off his tongue, so Jamīl fled and joined Khudhām and stayed there until Marwān was dismissed. And from Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. al-Sarrāj, he said: I was passing between Taymāʾ and Wādī al-Qurā, hurrying from Makkah, when I saw a great smooth rock on which there was a square platform, enough for a few people to sit on like a bench. One of the Arabs with us, I think a Juhanī, said: This is the sitting place of Jamīl and Buthayna, so know it. Among the admired poems of Jamīl b. Maʿmar is his saying: Buthayna has settled in my heart in a place between the ribs where no one else has settled. She hunted my heart with her eyes and a smile like hail when she shows it to us. And reproachers blamed me for loving her; would that they felt what I feel. When they prolonged their reproach of me concerning you, I said to them: Do not exceed in some of this blame, but be moderate. Before me died the brother of Nahd and his companion from Qays, then the grief of ʿUrwa was assuaged. All of them had death in their love, and I have found in her more than they found. I think, or I almost know, that she will bring me to the pool to which they came, unless she grants me some kindness with which she is generous, or God, the One, the Everlasting Refuge, turns it away from me. He also said: May God curse the one whose affection does not benefit him, and whose rope, when stretched, is not firm. And the one who, if the eye gives him a glance, severs the bonds of every close companion. And the one of two colors, not constant in character, treacherous in every oath. Would that the men who have vowed my blood and resolved to kill me, O Buthayn, would meet me. When they see me coming down from a mountain pass, they say, “Who is this?” though they know me. They say to me, “Welcome and ease and greeting,” but if they caught me for an hour, they would kill me. How could their blood not suffice for my blood, nor their wealth for my wealth, when they lose me? He also said: O woe to my soul! Enough for my soul is what it holds, and woe to my family for what has befallen my family. If she had left my reason with me, I would not have sought her; but my seeking her is for the reason that has gone. My two friends, as long as you live, have you ever seen a slain man weeping for love of his slayer before me? And from al-Muthannā b. Saʿd al-Juʿfī, he said: It reached me that Kuthayyir ʿAzza met Jamīl and said to him: When was your last meeting with Buthayna? He said: I have not met her since last year, when she was washing a garment in Wādī al-Dawm. Kuthayyir said: Would you like me to bring her back to you tonight? He said: Yes. So he went back to Buthayna. Her father said to him: O so-and-so, what brought you back? Were you not with us just before? He said: Yes, but some verses came to me that I composed about ʿAzza. He said: What are they? He said: I said to her: O ʿAzz, my companion sent me to the door of my house, and the messenger is entrusted. Do you not remember the covenant on the day I met you at the lower part of Wādī al-Dawm, while the garment was being washed? Buthayna said: Begone! Her father said: What upset you? She said: A dog that keeps coming to us from behind this mountain at night and in the middle of the day. He said: So he returned to him and said: She has promised you behind this mountain at night and in the middle of the day, so meet her whenever you wish. And Abū Muḥammad b. Qutayba related from some people that he said: I went out from Taymāʾ and saw an old woman on a she-ass. I said: From which tribe are you? She said: From ʿUdhra. I said: Do you relate anything about Buthayna and Jamīl? She said: By God, I was at a water source of al-Janāb, and we had withdrawn from the road. Our men had gone on a journey and left with us young servant boys. The boys had gone down one evening to a nearby settlement to talk with some neighbors of theirs. I and Buthayna remained twisting spun yarn for ourselves, when a man came down upon us from a hill facing us. He greeted us while we were alarmed. I returned the greeting and looked, and behold it was a man standing whom I thought resembled Jamīl. He came near, and I went to him and said: Jamīl? He said: Yes, by God. I said: You have exposed us and yourself to trouble. What brought you? He said: That ghoul behind you, pointing to Buthayna. He could not restrain himself. So I went to a wooden bowl containing ground dried curd and dates, and to a small skin of clarified butter, and I squeezed it over the curd and brought it near him. I said: Eat some of this. He did. I went to a water skin containing milk and poured some into a cup and mixed water into it, and he drank and recovered. I said: You have exerted yourself; what is your affair? He said: I intend to go to Egypt, and I came to bid you farewell and renew a covenant with you. By God, I have been on this hill that you see for three days waiting to find an opportunity, until I saw your young men go down this evening. So I came to renew the covenant with you. He spoke with us for a while, then we bade him farewell and he departed. It was only a short time before his obituary reached us from Egypt. The death of Jamīl b. Maʿmar. And from ʿAbbās b. Sahl b. Saʿd al-Sāʿidī, he said: I was in Syria when someone said to me: Would you like to see Jamīl? For he is close to death. I entered upon him while he was breathing his last, and it did not seem to me that death would seize him. He said to me: O son of Saʿd, what do you say of a man who never shed forbidden blood, never drank wine, never committed fornication, and who bears witness that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God for fifty years? I said: Who is this? I think he is only saved. God Almighty said: “If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will expiate your evil deeds and admit you to a noble entrance” [4:31]. Perhaps you mean yourself. He said: Yes. I said: How can that be, when you have been composing love poetry about Buthayna for twenty years? He said: This is the last of the times of this world and the first of the times of the Hereafter. May the intercession of Muḥammad not reach me if I ever put my hand on her out of desire. The most I ever obtained from her was that I would take her hand and place it on my heart to find comfort in it. Then he fainted, and when he regained consciousness, he began to recite: The obituary cried out and did not conceal Jamīl, and he lay in Egypt, a lying down without return. I used to trail my garment in Wādī al-Qurā, elated among fields and palm trees. Arise, Buthayna, and lament with wailing, and weep for your beloved before every beloved. Then he fainted and died. And from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, he said: When death came to Jamīl in Egypt, he said: Who knows Buthayna? A man said: I do. When he died, he went to the tribe of Buthayna and said: The obituary came early and did not conceal Jamīl, and he lay in Egypt, a lying down without return. [The obituary came early for a knight of high resolve, a hero who, when he carried the banner, was a champion.] Buthayna came out with her head uncovered and said: My consolation for Jamīl would be but an hour of time; its time has not come, nor has its season. It is the same to us, O Jamīl b. Maʿmar, when you die, whether life is harsh or gentle. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: He embraced Islam before his father, and he was devout. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “Was I not told that you fast by day and stand in prayer by night?” He said: Yes. He said to him: “Fast and break your fast, pray and sleep, for your body has a right over you, your Lord has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you.” And from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, he said: I asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission to write down what I heard from him, and he permitted me, so I wrote it. ʿAbd Allāh used to call his scroll “the truthful one.” And from Hārūn b. Riʾāb, he said: When death came to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, he said: A man of Quraysh had sought my daughter's hand, and I had made something like a promise to him. By God, I will not meet God with a third of hypocrisy. Bear witness that I have married her to him. ʿAbd Allāh died in Syria in this year at the age of seventy-two years. It is also said: He died in the year sixty-eight.
