Sawwār b. Hammām al-ʿAbdī: He was noble and generous, and Muʿāwiyah appointed him over al-Sind. From al-Haytham b. ʿAdī, from his authorities, they said: A man from the people of al-Baṣrah came as a delegate to ʿAbd Allāh b. Sawwār b. Hammām al-ʿAbdī, while he was Muʿāwiyah's governor over al-Sind. He waited for permission [to enter] for three days, then entered upon him. [ʿAbd Allāh] did not recognize him, so he said: 'Who is the man?' He said: 'From the people of al-Baṣrah, from Banū Tamīm, from Banū Saʿd.' He said: 'And what is behind you [i.e., what is your purpose]?' He said: 'A respect I rendered to you.' He said: 'And what is it?' He said: 'You used to pass by the assembly of Banū Sūr and greet, and I would return your greeting more completely than your greeting, with a louder voice than your speech, and I would follow you with my supplication from among the men of my people.' He said: 'A respect, by Allah.' And ʿAbd Allāh b. Sawwār was noble and generous, so he said: 'What is your need?' He said: 'My hope.' He said: 'And what is your hope?' He said: 'That by which I may be independent of others if I live, and through which my descendants may grow if I die.' So he ordered for him thirty thousand [dirhams], and clothed him, and said: 'It is yours, with me, every year, if time preserves me for you.' Al-Miswar b. Makhramah: Al-Miswar b. Makhramah b. Nawfal b. Uhayb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. His mother was ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAwf, the sister of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, one of the emigrant women who pledged allegiance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken [in death] when al-Miswar was eight years old, and he narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He used to keep close to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and memorize from him, and he was among the people of virtue and religion. He did not cease to be with his maternal uncle ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, going forward and backward, in the matter of the consultation [shūrā]. Then he withdrew to Makkah when Muʿāwiyah died, and he disliked the pledge to Yazīd. He remained there until al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr arrived and was present at the siege of Ibn al-Zubayr. From Ibrāhīm b. Ḥamzah, he said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ was brought striped garments from Yemen, and he divided them among the Emigrants and the Anṣār. Among them was a superb garment. He said: 'If I give it to any one of them, his companions will be angry and will think that I have preferred him over them. So direct me to a youth of Quraysh who has been raised with a good upbringing, and I will give it to him.' They named al-Miswar b. Makhramah, so he handed it to him. Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ looked at it on al-Miswar and said: 'What is this?' He said: 'The Commander of the Faithful clothed me with it.' So Saʿd went to ʿUmar and said: 'You clothe me with this garment, and you clothe the son of my brother with something better than it?' He said: 'O Abū Isḥāq, I disliked to give it to any one of you, for his companions would be angry, so I gave it to a youth who has been raised with a good upbringing, so that it would not be imagined that I preferred him over you.' Saʿd said: 'I have sworn to strike your head with the garment you gave me.' So ʿUmar lowered his head for him and said: 'At your disposal, O Abū Isḥāq, so be gentle with the old man; an old man with an old man.' Then he struck his head with the garment. From Umm Bakr bt. al-Miswar: Al-Miswar would not drink from the water that was placed in the mosque, and he disliked it, considering it to be charity. And he hoarded food, then he saw a cloud of the autumn clouds and disliked it. When morning came, he went to the market and said: 'Whoever comes to me, I will make him my agent.' That reached ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and he came to him in the market and said: 'Have you gone mad, O Miswar?' He said: 'No, by Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, but I saw a cloud of the autumn clouds and disliked it, and I disliked what benefits the Muslims, and I disliked to profit from it, and I intended not to profit from it.' ʿUmar said: 'May Allah reward you well.' Ibn Saʿd said: From Umm Bakr bt. al-Miswar, from her father: He used to fast continuously [al-dahr], and he was struck by a stone from a mangonel. It hit the house [the Kaʿbah] and a fragment split off from it and struck the wall of al-Miswar while he was standing praying. He fell ill from it for some days, then died on the day on which the news of the death of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah came to Makkah. Ibn al-Zubayr at that time was not calling himself caliph, and the matter was consultation [shūrā]. He was sixty-two years old. Yazīd b. al-Aswad al-Jurashī: He was a righteous servant. Rain had been withheld in the time of Muʿāwiyah, so [Yazīd] ascended the pulpit and supplicated for it, then ascended to him [Muʿāwiyah]. Muʿāwiyah said: 'O Allah, we seek intercession with You today through the best of us and the most virtuous of us. O Allah, we seek intercession with You through Yazīd b. al-Aswad.' So the people were given rain. Then something similar happened to him with al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays. From Ibn Abī Jamīlah, he said: The people were afflicted with drought in Damascus, and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays al-Fihrī was in charge of the people. He went out with the people to pray for rain and said: 'Where is Yazīd b. al-Aswad al-Jurashī?' No one answered him, several times. Then he said: 'I adjure him, if he hears my words, to stand unless he stands.' So he stood and raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, O Lord, Your servants have drawn near to You, so give them rain.' The people departed while they were wading through water. Then he said: 'O Allah, he has made me notorious, so give me rest from him.' Not a Friday passed before al-Ḍaḥḥāk was killed. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays b. Khālid al-Akbar b. Wahb b. Thaʿlabah b. Wāʾilah b. ʿAmr b. Shaybān b. Muḥārib b. Fihr b. Mālik, Abū Unays al-Fihrī, one of the Companions according to the sound view. He heard from the Prophet ﷺ and narrated several hadiths from him, and a group of the Successors narrated from him. He was the brother of Fāṭimah bt. Qays, who was ten years older than him, and Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ was his paternal uncle. Ibn Abī Ḥātim reported that. Some claimed that he had no companionship [of the Prophet]. Al-Wāqidī said: He met the Prophet ﷺ and heard from him before puberty. In another report from al-Wāqidī, he said: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk was born two years before the death of the Prophet ﷺ. He witnessed the conquest of Damascus and resided there, and he had a house there near the Ḥajar al-Dhahab, on the side facing the Baradā River. He was in charge of the people of Damascus on the day of Ṣiffīn, with Muʿāwiyah. When Muʿāwiyah took al-Kūfah, he appointed him as his deputy there in the year 54 [AH]. Al-Bukhārī narrated in al-Tārīkh that al-Ḍaḥḥāk recited Sūrat Ṣād in prayer with the people in al-Kūfah, and he prostrated in it, but ʿAlqamah and the companions of Ibn Masʿūd did not follow him in the prostration. Then Muʿāwiyah appointed him as his deputy over Damascus, and he remained with him until Muʿāwiyah died, and his son Yazīd took over, then his son's son Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd, then his affair came to what we mentioned. Imām Aḥmad said with his chain from al-Ḥasan that al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays wrote to Qays b. al-Haytham when Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah died: 'Peace be upon you. Now then, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, before the Hour there will be trials like pieces of the dark night, trials like pieces of smoke. In them a man's heart will die as his body dies. A man will be a believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening, and a believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning. Peoples will sell their share [of the Hereafter] and their religion for a small portion of this world." And Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah has died, and you are our brothers and our half-brothers, so do not precede us until we choose for ourselves.' Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated with his chain from Ḥammād b. Zayd, he said: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays entered upon Muʿāwiyah, and Muʿāwiyah said: 'It has become long for al-Ḍaḥḥāk until I returned him To a lineage among his people that is shortened.' Al-Ḍaḥḥāk said: 'Our people know that we are the saddle-cloths of horses.' He said: 'You have spoken truthfully; you are their saddle-cloths, and we are their horsemen.' He meant: you are trainers and managers, and we are the horsemen. I think its origin is from al-ḥils, which is a cloth that is under the packsaddle, meaning it adheres to their backs, just as the saddle-cloth adheres to the back of the camel. He also narrated that the muʾadhdhin of Damascus said to al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays: 'By Allah, O commander, I love you for the sake of Allah.' Al-Ḍaḥḥāk said to him: 'But I, by Allah, hate you for the sake of Allah.' He said: 'And why? May Allah set you right.' He said: 'Because you show off in your call to prayer, and you take a wage for your teaching.' Al-Ḍaḥḥāk, may Allah have mercy on him, was killed on the day of Marj Rāhiṭ, and that was in the middle of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, in the year 64 [AH]. Al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr: In this year al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr b. Saʿd al-Anṣārī was killed. His mother was ʿAmrah bt. Rawāḥah. He was the first child born in Madinah after the Hijrah to the Anṣār, in Jumādā al-Ūlā in the year two of the Hijrah. His mother brought him, carrying him, to the Prophet ﷺ, and he chewed a date and put it in his mouth [taḥnīk], and gave her glad tidings that he would live a praiseworthy life, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise. He lived in goodness and comfort, and he was appointed deputy over al-Kūfah for Muʿāwiyah for nine months. Then he resided in al-Shām and was appointed judge there after Faḍālah b. ʿUbayd, and Faḍālah was after Abū al-Dardāʾ. He was deputy over Ḥimṣ for Muʿāwiyah. He is the one who returned the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Madinah by the command of Yazīd to him regarding that. And he is the one who advised Yazīd to treat them well, and said: 'Treat them as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have treated them if he had seen them in this condition.' So Yazīd felt compassion for them, treated them well, honored them, and commanded that they be honored. Then when the battle of Marj Rāhiṭ occurred and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays was killed—and al-Nuʿmān had reinforced him with the people of Ḥimṣ—the people of Ḥimṣ attacked him and killed him in a village called Yayrīn. A man called Khālid b. Khalī al-Kalāʿī killed him. It is said: Khalī b. Dāwūd, and he is the grandfather of Khālid b. Khalī. His daughter Ḥumaydah bt. al-Nuʿmān elegized him and said: 'Would that Ibn Murnah and his son Had been a protection for your killing, And all Banū Umayyah— None of them remained. The courier came with his killing— O for the howling dogs! They seek victory with his head— It turned upon them a second time. I will weep for you in secret, And I will weep for you openly, And I will weep for you as long as I live, Along with the hostile beasts of prey.' It is said that Aʿshā Hamdān came to al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr while he was over Ḥimṣ and he was ill. Al-Nuʿmān said to him: 'What brought you here?' He said: 'That you may give me gifts, preserve my kinship, and pay my debt.' He said: 'By Allah, I have nothing, but I will ask them for something for you.' Then he stood and ascended the pulpit, then said: 'O people of Ḥimṣ, this is your cousin from Iraq, and he is asking you for a gift. What do you think?' They said: 'Decide upon our wealth.' He refused them, so they said: 'We have decided from our wealth: every man two dinars'—and they were twenty thousand men in the register [dīwān]. So al-Nuʿmān advanced it to him from the treasury: forty thousand dinars. When their stipends were distributed, he deducted two dinars from the stipend of every man among them. Among the words of al-Nuʿmān ؓ is his saying: 'Indeed, the destruction, the complete destruction, is that you do evil deeds in the time of trial.' Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān said with his chain from al-Haytham b. Mālik al-Ṭāʾī: I heard al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr on the pulpit saying: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, Satan has snares and traps. Among his snares and traps are insolence at the blessings of Allah, pride at the gift of Allah, arrogance over the servants of Allah, and following desire in other than what pleases Allah."' Among his sound and beautiful hadiths is what he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Indeed, the lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are ambiguous matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the ambiguous matters has kept his religion and honor clear. Whoever falls into the ambiguous matters falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd who grazes around a sanctuary, and is about to graze in it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary, and indeed the sanctuary of Allah, exalted is He, is His prohibitions. Indeed, in the body there is a lump of flesh; if it is sound, the rest of the body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the rest of the body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart." Al-Bukhārī and Muslim narrated it. Abū Mushir said: Al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr was over Ḥimṣ as governor for Ibn al-Zubayr. When the people of Ḥimṣ rebelled [tamarwana], al-Nuʿmān went out fleeing, and Khālid b. Khalī al-Kalāʿī pursued him and killed him. Abū ʿUbaydah and more than one said: In this year. Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated with his chains that Muʿāwiyah married a very beautiful woman. He sent one of his wives, Maysūn or Fākhitah, to look at her. When she saw her, she was greatly pleased with her. Then she returned to him, and he said: 'How did you find her?' She said: 'Wonderful in beauty, except that I saw beneath her navel a black mole, and I think that her husband will be killed and his head thrown into her lap.' So Muʿāwiyah divorced her, and al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr married her. When he was killed, his head was thrown into the lap of this wife of his. Abū Sulaymān b. Zabar said: He was killed at Salamyah in the year 66 [AH]. Others said: In the year 65 [AH]. And it is said: In the year 60 [AH]. The correct view is what we mentioned. Shaddād b. Aws b. Thābit: In this year Shaddād b. Aws b. Thābit died, and he was the nephew of Ḥassān b. Thābit. In this year Abū Barzah al-Aslamī died in Khurasan. In this year al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah b. Abī Sufyān died, according to one view. And in this year Shaqīq b. Thawr al-Sudūsī died.
