Translation

✧ The demolition of the Kaʿbah and its rebuilding in the days of Ibn al-Zubayr Abū Jaʿfar b. Jarīr said: In the year sixty-four Ibn al-Zubayr demolished the Kaʿbah, because its wall had tilted from the stones hurled at it by the mangonel. He demolished the walls until he reached the foundation of Ibrāhīm, and people were circumambulating and praying behind that. He placed the Black Stone in a chest within a silk covering, and he stored what was in the Kaʿbah of ornaments, garments, and perfume with the keeper, until Ibn al-Zubayr rebuilt it upon the form that the Messenger of God ﷺ had intended to build it. Al-Wāqidī said: When Ibn al-Zubayr wanted to demolish the House, he consulted the people about demolishing it. Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh and ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr advised him to do that, while Ibn ʿAbbās said: I fear that after you someone will come who demolishes it, and it will not cease to be demolished until people treat its sanctity lightly. But I think you should repair what is damaged in it and leave a house upon which the people have become Muslims and stones upon which the Messenger of God ﷺ was sent. Ibn al-Zubayr said: If the house of one of you were burned, he would not be content until he renewed it; so how about the house of your Lord?! Then Ibn al-Zubayr sought the choice from God for three days, then went forth on the fourth day. He began dismantling the corner down to the foundation. When they reached the foundation, they found an origin with the stone interlocking like the fingers of two hands. Ibn al-Zubayr summoned fifty men and made them witnesses to that. Then he built the House and incorporated the stone into it. He made for the Kaʿbah two doors set at ground level: a door by which one enters and a door by which one exits. He placed the Black Stone with his own hand and bound it with silver, because it had cracked. He made the height of the Kaʿbah twenty-seven cubits, whereas its height had been seventeen cubits, which he deemed too short. He increased the breadth of the Kaʿbah by ten cubits. He smeared its walls with musk and veiled it with silk brocade. Then he performed ʿumrah from the mosques of ʿĀʾishah, circumambulated the House, prayed and performed saʿy. He removed the stones and rubbish that were around the House and in the mosque, and the blood that was around it. The Kaʿbah had been cracked from top to bottom by the stones of the mangonel, the corner had blackened, and the Black Stone had split from the fire that was around the Kaʿbah. The reason for ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr's renewal of the Kaʿbah: The reason for Ibn al-Zubayr's renewal of it is what is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere in the musnads and sunan, through multiple routes, from ʿĀʾishah, the Mother of the Believers, that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Were it not that your people have only recently left unbelief, I would demolish the Kaʿbah and incorporate the stone into it, for your people fell short in expenditure; and I would make for it an eastern door and a western door, the people entering from one of them and exiting from the other; and I would attach its door to the ground, for your people raised its door in order to admit whom they wished and prevent whom they wished." So Ibn al-Zubayr built it upon that, as his maternal aunt ʿĀʾishah, the Mother of the Believers, informed him from the Messenger of God ﷺ, may God reward him well. Then when al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf overcame him in the year seventy-three, killed him and crucified him, he demolished the northern wall and took out the stone as it had been at first. He put the stones that he demolished into the interior of the Kaʿbah and crushed them within it. He raised the door and closed the western one. Those are its traces to this day. That was by the command of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān to him in that matter, for the ḥadīth had not reached him. When the ḥadīth reached him afterwards, he said: We wish we had left him alone and not undertaken that. Al-Mahdī b. al-Manṣūr al-ʿAbbāsī was minded to restore it to what Ibn al-Zubayr had built, and he consulted the imām Mālik b. Anas about that. He said: I dislike that kings should make it a playground—meaning that they toy with its construction according to their opinions; one follows the view of Ibn al-Zubayr, another the view of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. And God, glorified and exalted be He, knows best. It was also said: Its construction was in the year sixty-five. It is possible that the demolition was in one year and the building in the next.
