فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ نَفَرُوا عَنْهُ، وَفَارَقُوهُ، وَقَصَدُوا بِلَادَ الْعِرَاقِ وَخُرَاسَانَ، فَتَفَرَّقُوا فِيهَا بِأَبْدَانِهِمْ وَأَدْيَانِهِمْ وَمَذَاهِبِهِمْ وَمَسَالِكِهِمُ الْمُخْتَلِفَةِ الْمُنْتَشِرَةِ، الَّتِي لَا تَنْضَبِطُ وَلَا تَنْحَصِرُ ; ✧ The Khawārij's Separation from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr and What They Did In the year sixty-four, the Khawārij who had come to Makkah separated from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. They had fought alongside him against the people of Syria. The reason for their coming to him was that when Ibn Ziyād intensified his pressure on them after the killing of Abū Bilāl, they gathered and discussed that. Nāfiʿ b. al-Azraq said to them: 'God has sent down to you the Book and made jihād obligatory upon you, and He has argued against you with clarity. The people of injustice have unsheathed their swords against you, so let us go out to this one who has risen in Makkah. If he is of our view, we will wage jihād with him, and if he is otherwise, we will defend the House with him.' The Syrian army had marched toward Ibn al-Zubayr. The Khawārij traveled until they came to Ibn al-Zubayr, and he was pleased at their arrival. He informed them that he was of the like of their view, without any investigation. They fought alongside him against the people of Syria until Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah died and the people of Syria withdrew. Then they gathered and said: 'What you did yesterday was without sound judgment. You fight alongside a man about whom you do not know—perhaps he is not of the like of your view. Yesterday he and his father were fighting you and calling out: 'Revenge for ʿUthmān!' So go to him and ask him about ʿUthmān. If he dissociates from him, he will be your ally; if he refuses, he will be your enemy.' They came to him and asked him. He looked and saw that his companions around him were few, so he said: 'You have come to me when I wanted to rise, but come back to me in the evening so that I may inform you.' They departed, and he sent for his companions and gathered them around him with weapons. The Khawārij came while his companions were around him and above his head, with staffs in their hands. Ibn al-Azraq said to his companions: 'The man has resolved upon opposing you.' Nāfiʿ b. al-Azraq and ʿUbaydah b. Hilāl advanced toward him. ʿUbaydah said, after praising God: 'To proceed: God sent Muḥammad inviting to His worship and to making religion sincerely His. He called to that and the Muslims answered him. He acted among them according to the Book of God until God took him. The people made Abū Bakr successor, and Abū Bakr made ʿUmar successor. Both of them acted according to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Then the people made ʿUthmān successor. He protected the reserves, favored the kinsfolk, appointed the youth, raised the staff, set down the whip, tore the book, struck against the evil of oppression, sheltered the one exiled by the Messenger of God ﷺ, struck the foremost in virtue and deprived them, and took God's fayʾ that He had granted them and divided it among the dissolute of Quraysh and the wanton of the Arabs. A group went against him and killed him. We are their allies, and from Ibn ʿAffān and his allies we are dissociated. So what do you say, O Ibn al-Zubayr?' He said: 'I have understood what you mentioned about the Prophet ﷺ; he is above what you mentioned and above what you described. I have understood what you mentioned about Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and you have been granted success and have hit the mark. I have understood what you mentioned about ʿUthmān. Indeed I do not know of anyone among God's creation today more knowledgeable about Ibn ʿAffān and his affair than I. I was with him when the people found fault with him and sought his repentance. He did not leave anything without granting them satisfaction. Then they returned to him with a letter of his, claiming that he wrote it ordering their killing. He said to them: 'I did not write it. If you wish, bring your proof; and if there is none, I will swear to you.' By God, they did not bring him proof, nor did they make him swear; they leaped upon him and killed him. I have heard what you reproached him with, but it is not as you say. Rather, he is worthy of every good. I call you and whoever is present to witness that I am an ally of Ibn ʿAffān and an enemy of his enemies. May God dissociate Himself from you.' At that, they fled from him and separated from him. They headed for the lands of Iraq and Khurāsān, and dispersed throughout them in their bodies, their religions, their doctrines, and their varied, scattered paths, which cannot be controlled or contained, because they are branches of ignorance, the strength of souls, and corrupt belief. Despite this, they took possession of many lands and districts, until these were wrested from them afterward. Nāfiʿ b. al-Azraq al-Ḥanẓalī, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ṣaffār al-Saʿdī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibāḍ, Ḥanẓalah b. Bayhas, and the Banū al-Māḥūz: ʿAbd Allāh, ʿUbayd Allāh, and al-Zubayr, of the Banū Salīṭ b. Yarbūʿ—all of them from Tamīm—set out until they reached al-Baṣrah. Abū Ṭālūt of the Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil, Abū Fudayk ʿAbd Allāh b. Thawr b. Qays b. Thaʿlabah, and ʿAṭiyyah b. al-Aswad al-Yashkurī departed for al-Yamāmah, where they rose up with Abū Ṭālūt. Then afterward they agreed upon Najdah b. ʿĀmir al-Ḥanafī and abandoned Abū Ṭālūt. As for Nāfiʿ and his companions, they came to al-Baṣrah while they were of the view of Abū Bilāl. They gathered and discussed the virtue of jihād. Nāfiʿ went out at the head of three hundred, and that was when the people rose against Ibn Ziyād and the Khawārij broke the gate of the prison. They went out while the people were distracted from them by the war of the Azd, Rabīʿah, and Tamīm. When Nāfiʿ went out, they followed him, and the people of al-Baṣrah made peace upon ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith. The people devoted themselves to the Khawārij and frightened them. Nāfiʿ caught up with al-Ahwāz in Shawwāl of the year sixty-four. Those of them who remained in al-Baṣrah went out to Ibn al-Azraq, except those who did not want to go out that day, among them: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ṣaffār and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibāḍ, and men with them, upon their view. Nāfiʿ considered and saw that the allegiance of those who stayed behind from jihād, those of the Khawārij who sat, was not lawful for him, and that whoever stayed behind from him had no salvation. He said that to his companions and called them to dissociate from them, and that it was not lawful for them to marry them, eat their slaughtered animals, accept their testimony, take knowledge of the religion from them, or inherit from them. He also held the killing of children and indiscriminate attack, and that all the Muslims were unbelievers like the unbelievers of the Arabs: nothing would be accepted from them except Islam or death. Some of them answered him to that and some separated from him. Among those who separated from him was Najdah b. ʿĀmir, and he traveled to al-Yamāmah, where the Khawārij who were there obeyed him and abandoned Abū Ṭālūt. Nāfiʿ wrote to Ibn Ibāḍ and Ibn al-Ṣaffār inviting them and those with them to that. Ibn al-Ṣaffār read the letter but did not read it to his companions, fearing that they would disperse and differ. Ibn Ibāḍ took it and read it, and said: 'God fight him—what an opinion he has seen! Nāfiʿ spoke true: if the people were polytheists, his opinion would be the most correct of all people and his conduct like the conduct of the Prophet ﷺ toward the polytheists. But he has lied in what he says. The people are innocent of polytheism, but they are ungrateful for favors and rulings. Only their blood is lawful to us; anything else is forbidden to us.' Ibn al-Ṣaffār said to him: 'God dissociates Himself from you, for you have fallen short; and God dissociates Himself from Ibn al-Azraq, for he has gone to excess.' The other said: 'God dissociates Himself from you and from him.' The people separated, and the power of Ibn al-Azraq grew strong and his numbers increased. He stayed in al-Ahwāz collecting the land tax and strengthening himself with it. Then he advanced toward al-Baṣrah until he came near the bridge. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith sent against him Muslim b. ʿUbayd b. Kurayz b. Rabīʿah of the people of al-Baṣrah.
