وَوَقَعَ مِنْهُ تَخْبِيطٌ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُثْمَانَ جَلَدَهُ وَعَزَلَهُ عَنِ الْكُوفَةِ بَعْدَ أَرْبَعِ سِنِينَ فَأَقَامَ بِهَا، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى ✧ Of the notables who died in it Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī ؓ, and with him ten-odd members of his household, all were killed at Karbalāʾ ; it is also said: twenty-odd, as has preceded. A group of heroes and horsemen were killed with them. Jābir b. ʿAtīk b. Qays Jābir b. ʿAtīk b. Qays, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī He witnessed Badr and what followed it, and he was the bearer of the banner of Banū Muʿāwiya on the day of the conquest. Thus said Ibn al-Jawzī. He said: He died in this year at the age of seventy-one. Ḥamza b. ʿAmr al-Aslamī Ḥamza b. ʿAmr al-Aslamī A Companion of noble standing. It is established in the "Two Ṣaḥīḥs" from ʿĀʾisha that she said: Ḥamza b. ʿAmr asked the Messenger of God ﷺ, saying: I fast frequently; shall I fast while traveling? He said to him: "If you wish, fast; and if you wish, break your fast." He witnessed the conquest of Syria and was the bearer of good tidings to al-Ṣiddīq on the day of Ajnādayn. Al-Wāqidī said: It was he who brought good tidings to Kaʿb b. Mālik of God's acceptance of his repentance, so Kaʿb gave him his two garments. Al-Bukhārī narrated in "al-Tārīkh" with a good chain from him that he said: We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a dark night, and my fingers shone for me until I gathered upon them all the goods belonging to the people. They agreed that he died in this year, I mean the year sixty-one. Shayba b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Ṭalḥa Shayba b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Ṭalḥa al-ʿAbdarī al-Ḥajabī He was the keeper of the key of the Kaʿba. His father was among those whom ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib killed on the day of Uḥud as an unbeliever. Shayba professed Islam on the day of the conquest and witnessed Ḥunayn while there was something of doubt in his heart. He had resolved to assassinate the Messenger of God ﷺ, but God informed His Messenger ﷺ of that, and he told him of what he had intended, so he became a Muslim inwardly, and his Islam was sincere. He fought that day and remained steadfast among those who were steadfast. Al-Wāqidī said, from his shaykhs: Shayba said: I used to say, by God, even if all people believed in Muḥammad, I would not believe in him. When he conquered Makkah and went out to Hawāzin, I went out with him hoping to find an opportunity to exact vengeance for all of Quraysh from him. He said: One day the people became engaged in fighting, and the Messenger of God ﷺ dismounted from his mule. I drew near to him and unsheathed my sword to strike him with it, but a flame of fire was shown to me that nearly burned me. The Messenger of God ﷺ turned to me and said: "O Shayba, come close to me." I came close to him, and he placed his hand on my chest and said: "O God, protect him from Satan." He said: By God, he did not lift his hand until he had become dearer to me that day than my hearing and my sight. Then he said: "Go and fight." He said: I advanced against the enemy, and by God, if I had met my father, I would have killed him had he been alive. When the people retreated, he said to me: "O Shayba, what God intended for you is better than what you intended for yourself." Then he told me all that was in my soul of which no one had knowledge except God, mighty and majestic. So I pronounced the testimony of faith and said: I seek God's forgiveness. He said: "May God forgive you." He held the office of ḥijāba after ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥa, and the ḥijāba remained in his descendants and his house until today. To him are attributed the Banū Shayba, who are the doorkeepers of the Kaʿba. Khalīfa b. Khayyāṭ and more than one other said: He died in the year fifty-nine. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: He remained until the days of Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya. Ibn al-Jawzī said in "al-Muntaẓam": He died in this year. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Rabīʿa ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Rabīʿa b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, a noble Companion, one of those who moved to Damascus, and he had a house there. When he died, he bequeathed his estate to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya while he was the Commander of the Faithful. Al-Walīd b. ʿUqba b. Abī Muʿayṭ b. Abān b. Abī ʿAmr Dhakwān b. Umayya b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy, Abū Wahb al-Qurashī al-ʿAbshamī, and he was the brother of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān through his mother Arwā bt. Kurayz b. Rabīʿa b. Ḥabīb b. ʿAbd Shams, and her mother was Umm Ḥakīm al-Bayḍāʾ bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Al-Walīd had as brothers Khālid, ʿUmāra, and Umm Kulthūm. The Messenger of God ﷺ had killed his father after the battle of Badr, among the captives, by patience before him. He said: O Muḥammad, who will care for the children? He said: "For them is the Fire." Likewise he did with al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith. This al-Walīd became a Muslim on the day of the conquest. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him to collect the alms of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq. They came out to meet him, but he thought they had come out only to fight him, so he returned and informed the Messenger of God ﷺ of that. He intended to dispatch an army against them, but that reached them, and some of them came to apologize to him and to inform him of the true picture of what had occurred. Then God, exalted, revealed concerning al-Walīd: O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you harm a people in ignorance [al-Ḥujurāt: 6]. More than one of the exegetes mentioned that. God knows best as to its authenticity. Abū ʿAmr b. ʿAbd al-Barr related that there was consensus on that. ʿUmar appointed him over the alms of Banū Taghlib, and ʿUthmān appointed him as his deputy over al-Kūfa after Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ in the year twenty-five. Then he drank wine and prayed with his companions, then turned to them and said: Shall I give you more? And confusion occurred from him. Then ʿUthmān flogged him and removed him from al-Kūfa after four years, so he remained there. When ʿAlī came to Iraq, he traveled to al-Raqqa and bought for himself an estate near it, and he remained there, withdrawing from all the wars that occurred in the days of ʿAlī and Muʿāwiya and after them, until he died at this estate of his, and was buried there in this year. It is fifteen miles from al-Raqqa. It is also said that he died in the days of Muʿāwiya. God knows best. Imām Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd narrated for him one hadith concerning the conquest of Makkah. Ibn al-Jawzī mentioned his death in this year. Umm Salama, Mother of the Believers Umm Salama, Mother of the Believers Hind bt. Abī Umayya Ḥudhayfa—or it is said: Suhayl—b. al-Mughīra b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm al-Qurashiyya al-Makhzūmiyya. She was first married to her paternal cousin Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Asad, who died leaving her, so the Messenger of God ﷺ married her, and he consummated the marriage with her in Shawwāl of the year two, after the battle of Badr. She had heard from her husband Abū Salama a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ, that he said: "There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity and says: To God we belong and to Him we return; O God, reward me in my calamity and grant me something better than it after it—except that God will replace it for him with something better than it." She said: When Abū Salama died, I said that, then I said: Who could be better than Abū Salama, the first man to emigrate?
