Translation
✧ The story of Yazīd b. Rabīʿah b. Mufarrigh al-Ḥimyarī with the two sons of Ziyād, ʿUbayd Allāh and ʿAbbād. Yazīd b. Mufarrigh al-Ḥimyarī was with ʿAbbād b. Ziyād in Sijistān, and he (ʿAbbād) was occupied with the war against the Turks, so Ibn Mufarrigh found him slow. The soldiers who were with ʿAbbād suffered scarcity in the fodder of their mounts, so Ibn Mufarrigh said: Would that beards were grass, so that we could feed them to the horses of the Muslims. ʿAbbād b. Ziyād had a great beard, so it was said: He intended none but you. He was sought, so he fled from him and satirized him with poems. Among what he satirized him with was his saying: When Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥarb perishes, then give glad tidings to the people of your saddle of splitting. For I bear witness that your mother did not lie with Abū Sufyān while she put aside the veil. But it was a matter in which there was confusion, upon great fear and alarm. He also said: Convey to Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥarb a message sent deep from the Yemeni man: Do you become angry that it is said your father is chaste, and are you pleased that it is said your father is an adulterer? For I bear witness that your kinship to Ziyād is like the kinship of the elephant to the offspring of the she-ass. Yazīd b. Mufarrigh came to al-Baṣrah while ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād was in Syria with Muʿāwiyah. His brother ʿAbbād wrote to him about what had happened from him, so ʿUbayd Allāh informed Muʿāwiyah of it and recited the poetry to him, and sought his permission to kill Ibn Mufarrigh. He did not permit him and ordered him to discipline him. When Ibn Mufarrigh came to al-Baṣrah, he sought protection with al-Aḥnaf and other leaders, but no one granted him protection. He sought protection with al-Mundhir b. al-Jārūd, and he granted him protection and brought him into his house. His daughter was married to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād. When ʿUbayd Allāh came to al-Baṣrah, he was informed of Ibn Mufarrigh's whereabouts. ʿUbayd Allāh came to al-Mundhir to greet him, and then sent the police to al-Mundhir's house. They seized Ibn Mufarrigh and brought him to him while al-Mundhir was with him. Al-Mundhir said to him: O emir, I have granted him protection! He said: O Mundhir, he praises you and your father and satirizes me and my father, and you grant him protection against me! Then he ordered him to be given a purgative, then he was mounted on a donkey and paraded around while he was defecating in his clothes. He said, satirizing al-Mundhir: I left Quraysh to seek protection among them, and I sought protection with ʿAbd al-Qays, the people of al-Mushaqqar. People who granted us protection, but their protection was like whirlwinds of the farting of dissipated Iraq. So my neighbor from Judhaymah became sleeping, and none protects neighbors except the one who rolls up his sleeves. He said to ʿUbayd Allāh: Water washes away what you did, but my saying is firmly fixed in the decaying bones. Then ʿUbayd Allāh sent him to his brother ʿAbbād in Sijistān. The Yemenis in Syria spoke to Muʿāwiyah about him, so he sent to ʿAbbād and took him from him. He came to Muʿāwiyah and said on his way: O ʿAdas, what authority does ʿAbbād have over you? You are safe while this released one you carry. By my life, an imam and a rope firm for mankind saved you from the pit of destruction. I will be grateful for the good favor you have bestowed, and one like me is worthy of thanking the benefactors. When he entered upon Muʿāwiyah, he wept and said: I was subjected to what no Muslim like me has been subjected to without any offense. He said: Are you not the one who said: Convey to Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥarb the ode? He said: No, by God who magnified the right of the Commander of the Faithful, I did not say this; rather ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥakam, the brother of Marwān, said it and used me as a pretext to satirize Ziyād. He said: Are you not the one who said: For I bear witness that your mother did not lie with Abū Sufyān while she put aside the veil, among many poems in which you satirized Ibn Ziyād? Go, for we have pardoned you. Dwell in whichever land of God you wish. He settled in al-Mawṣil and married there. On the night of his consummation with his wife, he went out in the morning to hunt and met a man on a donkey. He said: From where have you come? He said: From al-Ahwāz. He said: What is the state of the water of Masruqān? He said: As it was. He longed for al-Baṣrah, so he went there and entered upon ʿUbayd Allāh, who granted him safety. Muʿāwiyah became angry with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥakam, and intercession was made for him. He said: I will not be pleased with him until Ibn Ziyād is pleased with him. He came to al-Baṣrah to ʿUbayd Allāh and said to him: You are an increase in the family of Ḥarb, more beloved to me than one of my daughters. I see you as a brother, an uncle, and a cousin, so I do not know, by the unseen, what you see me as. [He said]: I see you as a bad poet! And he was pleased with him.
