The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
وِلَايَةِ ابْنِ عَامِرٍ الْبَصْرَةَ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ ثُمَّ أَرَادَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنْ يُوَلِّيَ عُتْبَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ الْبَصْرَةَ، فَكَلَّمَهُ ابْنُ عَامِرٍ وَقَالَ لَهُ: إِنَّ لِي بِالْبَصْرَةِ وَدَائِعَ وَأَمْوَالًا، فَإِنْ لَمْ تُوَلِّنِي عَلَيْهَا ذَهَبَتْ. فَوَلَّاهُ الْبَصْرَةَ. فَقَدِمَهَا فِي آخِرِ سَنَةِ إِحْدَى وَأَرْبَعِينَ، وَجَعَلَ إِلَيْهِ خُرَاسَانَ وَسَجِسْتَانَ، فَجَعَلَ عَلَى شُرْطَتِهِ حَبِيبَ بْنَ شِهَابٍ، وَقِيلَ: قَيْسَ بْنَ الْهَيْثَمِ وَعَلَى الْقَضَاءِ عَمِيرَةَ بْنَ يَثْرِبِيٍّ أَخَا عَمْرٍو، وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ فِي وَقْعَةِ الْجَمَلِ أَنَّ عَمِيرَةَ قُتِلَ فِيهَا، وَقِيلَ عَمْرٌو هُوَ الْمَقْتُولُ، ( وَاللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ ).
Translation
✧ The appointment of Ibn ʿĀmir over al-Baṣrah by Muʿāwiyah Then Muʿāwiyah wanted to appoint ʿUtbah b. Abī Sufyān over al-Baṣrah, but Ibn ʿĀmir spoke to him and said to him: "I have deposits and wealth in al-Baṣrah, and if you do not appoint me over it, they will be lost." So he appointed him over al-Baṣrah. He arrived there at the end of the year forty-one, and he placed Khurāsān and Sijistān under his authority. He appointed Ḥabīb b. Shihāb over his shurṭah, and it is said: Qays b. al-Haytham, and over the judiciary ʿUmayrah b. Yathribī, the brother of ʿAmr. It was mentioned earlier in the Battle of the Camel that ʿUmayrah was killed in it, and it is said that ʿAmr was the one killed, (and Allah, glorified be He, knows best what is correct).
