The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

Translation

✧ A group of the Khawārij rose up against him The reason for that was that when Muʿāwiyah entered al-Kūfah and al-Ḥasan and his people departed from it heading toward the Ḥijāz, a faction of the Khawārij, about five hundred of them, said: What leaves no doubt has come, so march to Muʿāwiyah and fight him. They marched until they drew near al-Kūfah, led by Farwah b. Nawfal, and encamped at al-Nukhaylah near al-Kūfah. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī had already set out intending al-Madīnah, so Muʿāwiyah wrote to him calling him to fight Farwah. His messenger caught up with him at al-Qādisiyyah or close to it, but he did not return. He wrote to Muʿāwiyah: Had I preferred to fight anyone from the people of the qiblah, I would have begun with fighting you. But I left you for the good of the ummah and the sparing of its blood. Muʿāwiyah sent against them a force from the people of Syria, and they fought them. The Syrians were routed. Muʿāwiyah said to the people of al-Kūfah: By God, you have no assurance of safety with me until you repel them. So the people of al-Kūfah went out and fought them. The Khawārij said to them: Is Muʿāwiyah not our enemy and yours? Leave us to fight him. If we strike him down, we will have spared you your enemy, and if he strikes us down, you will have been spared us. They said: We must fight you. The Asjaʿ seized their leader Farwah, spoke with him, admonished him, but he did not turn back. They took him by force and brought him into al-Kūfah. The Khawārij appointed over themselves ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Ḥawsāʾ, a man from Ṭayyiʾ. The people of al-Kūfah fought them and killed them in Rabīʿ al-Awwal (and it is said: in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir). Ibn Abī al-Ḥawsāʾ was killed. When Ibn Abī al-Ḥawsāʾ took charge of the Khawārij, he had been warned that the authorities might crucify him, so he said: I care not, when our souls are taken, what you do with limbs and skins. The Galaxy and the two eagles run by decree, and the sun and the moon journey by measure. I have learned — and the best speech is that which profits — that the fortunate one is he who escapes from the Fire.
