✧ Description of his killing, ؓ The agreement of three Kharijites to kill ʿAlī, Muʿāwiyah, and ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ Ibn Jarīr and more than one of the scholars of history, biography, and accounts of the people mentioned that three of the Kharijites—namely ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr, known as Ibn Muljam al-Ḥimyarī then al-Kindī, an ally of Banū Jabalah of Kindah, the Egyptian. He was dark-skinned, handsome-faced, radiant, his hair reached the lobes of his ears, and on his forehead was the mark of prostration. And al-Burak b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī. And ʿAmr b. Bakr al-Tamīmī as well—met together and discussed the killing of their brothers from the people of Nahrawān by ʿAlī. They invoked mercy upon them and said: What shall we do with remaining after them?! They were among the best of people and the most frequent in prayer. They were callers of the people to their Lord, not fearing in God the blame of any blamer. If only we sold our souls and came upon the imams of error and killed them, thereby relieving the lands of them and avenging our brothers. Ibn Muljam said: I will suffice you against ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Al-Burak b. ʿAbd Allāh said: I will suffice you against Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān. And ʿAmr b. Bakr said: I will suffice you against ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. They made a pact and bound themselves that none of them would turn back from his companion until he killed him or died in the attempt. They took their swords and poisoned them, and appointed the seventeenth of Ramaḍān for each of them to attack his companion by night in the land where he was. As for Ibn Muljam, he traveled to Kufa and entered it, concealing his affair even from his companions among the Kharijites who were there. While he was sitting among a group of Banū Taym al-Ribāb, they were discussing their slain on the day of Nahrawān, there came a woman of theirs called Qaṭāmī bt. al-Shijnah. ʿAlī had killed her father and brother on the day of Nahrawān. She was surpassingly beautiful and famous for it. She had secluded herself in the congregational mosque, worshipping therein. When Ibn Muljam saw her, she stole his reason, and he forgot the errand for which he had come. He proposed marriage to her. She stipulated for him three thousand dirhams, a servant, a singing-girl, and that he kill ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib for her. He said: That is yours. By God, nothing brought me to this town except the killing of ʿAlī. He married her and consummated the marriage. Then she began to urge him to that, and she enlisted for him a man of her people from Taym al-Ribāb called Wardān, to be a support with him. Ibn Muljam also won over another man called Shabīb b. Bajarah al-Ashjaʿī al-Ḥarūrī. Ibn Muljam said to him: Would you like the honor of this world and the next? He said: And what is that? He said: The killing of ʿAlī. He said: May your mother be bereaved of you! You have brought something terrible, how can you have power over him? He said: I will lie in wait for him in the mosque. When he comes out for the dawn prayer, we will attack him and kill him. If we escape, we shall heal ourselves and attain our revenge; if we are killed, then what is with God is better than this world. He said: Woe to you! If it were other than ʿAlī, it would be easier for me. I have known his precedence in Islam and his kinship to the Messenger of God ﷺ. I do not find my breast expanding to kill him. He said: Do you not know that he killed the people of Nahrawān? He said: Yes. He said: Then we will kill him for those of our brothers whom he killed. He agreed to that after reluctance. The month of Ramaḍān began. Ibn Muljam appointed them for the night of Friday, the seventeenth night after it had passed, and said: This is the night on which I appointed my companions, that each of us should kill his companion to whom he went. The killing of ʿAlī, ؓ Then they came to Qaṭāmī, the wife of Ibn Muljam. She called for strips of silk for them, and she bound them therewith. They were in the mosque. These three—Ibn Muljam, Wardān, and Shabīb—came, wrapping themselves in their swords. They sat opposite the gate from which ʿAlī would come out. When he came out, he began rousing the people from sleep to prayer, saying: Prayer, prayer. Shabīb sprang at him with the sword and struck him, and the blow fell on the arch. Then Ibn Muljam struck him with the sword on the top of his head, and his blood flowed over his beard, ؓ. When Ibn Muljam struck him, he said: No judgment but God's, not for you, O ʿAlī, nor for your companions. He began reciting His words, Exalted is He: "And of the people is he who sells his soul seeking the pleasure of God, and God is kind to His servants" [al-Baqarah: 207]. ʿAlī called out: Seize him. Wardān fled, and a man from Ḥaḍramawt caught him and killed him. Shabīb went and escaped with his life, eluding the people. Ibn Muljam was seized. ʿAlī brought forward Jaʿdah b. Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb, and he led the people in the dawn prayer. ʿAlī was carried to his house, and Ibn Muljam was brought to him. He was made to stand before him, bound, may God disfigure him. He said to him: O enemy of God, did I not treat you well? He said: Yes. He said: What drove you to this? He said: I sharpened it for forty mornings, and I asked God to kill with it the worst of His creation. ʿAlī said to him: I do not think you will be anything but killed by it, and I do not think you are anything but among the worst of His creation. Then he said: If I die, kill him; if I live, I know better how to deal with him. From Abū Tiḥyā: When Ibn Muljam struck ʿAlī, he said to them: Do with him as the Messenger of God ﷺ wanted to do with a man who intended to kill him, for he said: "Kill him, then burn him." It is related that Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿAlī said to Ibn Muljam while he stood: Woe to you! Why did you strike the Commander of the Faithful? He said: I only struck your father. She said: He is not seriously harmed. He said: Then why do you weep? By God, I struck him a blow that had it fallen on the people of Egypt, they would all have died. By God, I poisoned this sword for a month. I bought it for a thousand and poisoned it for a thousand. Jundub b. ʿAbd Allāh said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you die, shall we pledge allegiance to al-Ḥasan? He said: I neither command you nor forbid you; you know best. The deathbed of ʿAlī, ؓ When ʿAlī was dying, he kept repeating: There is no god but God, uttering nothing else. It was said that the last thing he spoke was: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" [al-Zalzalah: 7, 8]. The testament of ʿAlī, ؓ, to his two sons al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn He enjoined his two sons al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn to fear God, prayer, zakāt, forgiveness of sin, suppression of anger, maintaining kinship ties, forbearance toward the ignorant, understanding in religion, deliberateness in affairs, constant recitation of the Qurʾān, good neighborliness, commanding right, forbidding wrong, and avoiding indecencies. He enjoined them regarding their brother Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyyah, and he enjoined him with what he enjoined them: to honor them and not decide any matter without them. He wrote all that in his testament, ؓ and make him content. The attempt to kill Muʿāwiyah and ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, ؓ As for al-Burak b. ʿAbd Allāh, he lay in wait for Muʿāwiyah on that night in which ʿAlī was struck. When Muʿāwiyah came out to pray the dawn prayer, he attacked him with the sword. The sword fell on his buttock. He was seized. He said: I have news that I will confide to you; if I tell you, will that benefit me with you? He said: Yes. He said: A brother of mine killed ʿAlī this night. He said: Perhaps he was not able to do that. He said: Indeed he was. ʿAlī had no one guarding him. Muʿāwiyah ordered him to be killed, and he was killed. Muʿāwiyah sent for al-Sāʿidī, who was a physician. When he examined him, he said: Choose either that I heat an iron and place it where the sword struck, or that I give you a draught that will cut off offspring from you and from which you will recover, for your wound is poisoned. Muʿāwiyah said: As for the fire, I have no endurance for it. As for offspring, then Yazīd and ʿAbd Allāh are enough to delight my eye. He gave him a draught, and he recovered, and no child was born to him after that. At that, Muʿāwiyah ordered the construction of private enclosures, night guards, and police standing at his head when he prostrated. He was the first to institute these in Islam. It is said that Muʿāwiyah did not kill al-Burak; rather, he ordered that his hand and foot be cut off. He remained until Ziyād governed Baṣrah. Al-Burak had gone there and had children born to him. Ziyād said to him: Children are born to you, while you left the Commander of the Faithful with no children born to him? He killed him and crucified him. As for ʿAmr b. Bakr, he sat waiting for ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ that night, but he did not come out. He was suffering from a stomach ailment. He ordered Khārijah b. Abī Ḥabībah—who was his chief of police, of Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy—to go out and lead the people in prayer. He attacked him, thinking he was ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, and struck him and killed him. The people brought him to ʿAmr and greeted him with the emirate. He said: Who is this? They said: ʿAmr. He said: Then whom did I kill? They said: Khārijah. He said: By God, O wicked one, I did not think it was anyone other than you! ʿAmr said: You intended me, and God intended Khārijah. ʿAmr brought him forward and killed him.
