The caliphate of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib

✧ Mention of the march of the Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī, ؓ, against the Khawārij ʿAlī's encounter with the astrologer When ʿAlī and the army with him resolved to begin with the Khawārij, his crier called out among the people for departure, and he crossed the bridge and prayed two rakʿahs at it. Then he took the road by the monastery of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, then the monastery of Abū Mūsā, then along the bank of the Euphrates. There an astrologer met him and advised him of an hour of the day in which he should march and not march at any other, for if he marched at another hour, he feared for him. ʿAlī opposed him and marched contrary to what the astrologer said, and he said: "We march trusting in Allah and relying upon Him, and belying the astrologer's statement." So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, granted him victory, and ʿAlī said: "I only wanted to show the people his error, and I feared that the people would say 'He only prevailed because he agreed with what he advised,' and thus they would associate others with Allah." ʿAlī took the direction of al-Anbār and sent ahead of him Qays b. Saʿd, and ordered him to go to al-Madāʾin and to meet him with its governor Saʿd b. Masʿūd – who was the brother of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī – in the army of al-Madāʾin. The people gathered there to ʿAlī, and he sent to the Khawārij: "Hand over to us the killers of our brethren from among you so that we may kill them in retribution. Then we shall leave you and go away from you to Syria. Then perhaps Allah will turn your hearts and restore you to something better than what you are upon." They sent back to him saying: "All of us killed your brethren, and we deem their blood and your blood lawful." Qays b. Saʿd b. ʿUbādah advanced to them and admonished them about the grave matter and the momentous affair they were committing, but that did not benefit them. Likewise Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī did; he reproached and rebuked them, but it was of no avail with them. The Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib advanced to them and admonished, frightened, warned, cautioned, threatened, and menaced them, and said: "You disapproved of a matter that you yourselves called me to and insisted upon it. I forbade you from it, but you did not accept. Here I am and here you are. Return to what you came out of, and do not commit Allah's sacred prohibitions, for your souls have made a matter seem fair to you by which you kill Muslims. By Allah, if you killed a chicken for it, it would be grave before Allah, so how about the blood of Muslims?!" Their only response was to hasten among themselves that they should not address them or speak to them, and to prepare to meet the Lord, Mighty and Majestic: "Depart, depart to Paradise!" They advanced and lined up for battle and prepared for combat. They placed on their right wing Zayd b. Ḥuṣayn al-Ṭāʾī al-Sinbisī, on the left wing Shurayḥ b. Awfā, over their cavalry Ḥamzah b. Sinān, and over the infantry Ḥurqūṣ b. Zuhayr al-Saʿdī, and they stood ready to fight ʿAlī and his companions. ʿAlī placed on his right wing Ḥujr b. ʿAdī, on the left wing Shabath b. Ribʿī or Maʿqil b. Qays al-Riyāḥī, over his cavalry Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, over the infantry Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī, and over the people of Madinah – who were seven hundred – Qays b. Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. ʿAlī ordered Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī to raise a banner of security for the Khawārij and to say to them: "Whoever comes to this banner is safe, and whoever departs to al-Kūfah or al-Madāʾin is safe. We have no need for your blood, except for those who killed our brethren." Many groups among them departed. They had been four thousand, and none remained except a thousand – or fewer – with ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb al-Rāsibī. They advanced against ʿAlī, and ʿAlī placed the cavalry before him, put forward the archers from among them, and arrayed the infantry behind the cavalry. He said to his companions: "Hold back from them until they begin against you." The Khawārij came forward saying: "There is no judgment but Allah's! Depart, depart to Paradise!" They charged the cavalry whom ʿAlī had placed forward and scattered them until one party of the cavalry went to the right wing and another to the left wing. The archers met them with arrows and shot at their faces. The cavalry turned upon them from the right and left wings, and the men advanced against them with spears and swords. They laid the Khawārij low, and they fell slain beneath the horses' hooves. Their commanders were killed: ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb, Ḥurqūṣ b. Zuhayr, Shurayḥ b. Awfā, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Shajarah al-Sulamī, may Allah disfigure them. Abū Ayyūb said: "I thrust a man of the Khawārij with a spear and pierced him through his back, and I said to him: 'Rejoice, O enemy of Allah, in the Fire.' He said: 'You shall know which of us is more deserving of it as a place of burning.'" They said: Only seven men of ʿAlī's companions were killed. ʿAlī walked among the slain from them and said: "Wretchedness to you! The one who deceived you has harmed you." They said: "O Commander of the Faithful, who deceived them?" He said: "Satan and souls that enjoin evil; they deceived them with false hopes, made sins seem fair to them, and informed them that they would be victorious." Then he ordered that the wounded among them be gathered, and behold they were four hundred. He handed them over to their tribes to treat them, and he distributed the weapons and belongings he found of theirs. From al-Nazzāl b. Sabrah, that ʿAlī did not take the fifth of what he seized from the Khawārij on the day of al-Nahrawān, but returned all of it to their families, until the last of that was a cauldron that was brought to him and he returned it. ʿAlī's ؓ departure in search of Dhū al-Thudyah Abū Mikhnaf said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī Ḥurrah narrated to me that ʿAlī went out in search of Dhū al-Thudyah, and with him were Sulaymān b. Thumāmah al-Ḥanafī Abū Jabrah and al-Rayyān b. Ṣabrah b. Hawdhah. Al-Rayyān found him in a pit on the side of the river among forty or fifty slain. He said: When he was extracted for him, he looked at his upper arm, and behold there was flesh gathered on his shoulder like a woman's breast, with a nipple like the nipple of a breast, upon which were black hairs. When it was stretched, it extended until it matched his other hand, then it was released and returned to his shoulder like a woman's breast. When ʿAlī saw him, he said: "By Allah, were it not that you would rely on something other than deeds, I would inform you of what Allah decreed on the tongue of His Prophet, ﷺ, for those who fight them with clear insight in fighting them and knowledge of the truth." From Nāfiʿ b. Maslamah al-Aḥmasī, he said: Dhū al-Thudyah was a man of ʿUraynah from Bajīlah. He was black, intensely black, with a foul odor, known in the army. He accompanied us despite that and would come down to fight us and we would come down to fight him. From al-Rayyān b. Ṣibrah al-Ḥanafī, he said: We witnessed al-Nahrawān with ʿAlī, and when he found the maimed one, he prostrated in a long prostration in gratitude to Allah. From Muḥammad b. Qays al-Hamdānī, from a man of his people named Abū Mūsā, that when ʿAlī found the maimed one, he prostrated. From Ḥabbah al-ʿUranī, he said: When ʿAlī killed the people of al-Nahrawān, the people began saying: "Praise be to Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, who cut off their last remnant." ʿAlī said: "No, by Allah, they are in the loins of men and the wombs of women. When they emerge from between the arteries, they rarely fight anyone but that they are accustomed to prevailing over them." He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb al-Rāsibī had calloused places of prostration from the intensity of his exertion and the abundance of his prostration, and he used to be called Dhū al-Manqabāt. Al-Haytham narrated from one of the Khawārij that he said: Out of his hatred for ʿAlī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb used to call him nothing but al-Jāḥid. Al-Haytham b. ʿAdī said: Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid narrated to us, from Ḥakīm b. Jābir, he said: ʿAlī was asked about the people of al-Nahrawān: "Are they polytheists?" He said: "From polytheism they fled." It was said: "Are they hypocrites?" He said: "Indeed, the hypocrites remember Allah but little." It was said: "Then what are they, O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "Our brethren who transgressed against us, so we fought them for their transgression against us."
