The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
ذِكْرُ زَوْجَاتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ وَبَنَاتِهِ، ؓ تَزَوَّجَ بِرُقَيَّةَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، ﷺ، فَوُلِدَ لَهُ مِنْهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، وَبِهِ كَانَ يُكَنَّى، بَعْدَ مَا كَانَ يُكَنَّى فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ بِأَبِي عَمْرٍو، ثُمَّ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ، تَزَوَّجَ بِأُخْتِهَا أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ، ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَتْ، فَتَزَوَّجَ بِفَاخِتَةَ بِنْتِ غَزْوَانَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، فَوُلِدَ لَهُ مِنْهَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ الْأَصْغَرُ. وَتَزَوَّجَ بِأُمِّ عَمْرٍو بِنْتِ جُنْدُبِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْأَزْدِيَّةِ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ عَمْرًا، وَخَالِدًا، وَأَبَانَ وَعُمَرَ، وَمَرْيَمَ، وَتَزَوَّجَ بِفَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ الْمَخْزُومِيَّةِ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ الْوَلِيدَ وَسَعِيدًا. وَتَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ الْبَنِينَ بِنْتَ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حِصْنٍ الْفِزَارِيَّةَ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ، وَيُقَالُ: وَعُتْبَةَ. وَتَزَوَّجَ رَمْلَةَ بِنْتَ شَيْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بْنِ قُصَيٍّ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ عَائِشَةَ، وَأُمَّ أَبَانَ، وَأُمَّ عَمْرٍو ; بَنَاتِ عُثْمَانَ. وَتَزَوَّجَ نَائِلَةَ بِنْتَ الْفَرَافِصَةِ بْنِ الْأَحْوَصِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ حِصْنِ بْنِ ضَمْضَمِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ جَنَابِ بْنِ كَلْبٍ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ مَرْيَمَ وَيُقَالُ: وَعَنْبَسَةَ. وَقُتِلَ، ؓ، وَعِنْدَهُ أَرْبَعٌ ; نَائِلَةُ، وَرَمْلَةُ، وَأُمُّ الْبَنِينَ، وَفَاخِتَةُ. وَيُقَالُ: إِنَّهُ طَلَّقَ أُمَّ الْبَنِينَ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ.
Translation
✧ Mention of his wives, sons, and daughters, ؓ. He married Ruqayyah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, and she bore him ʿAbdullāh, by whom he was given the kunyah, after having been given the kunyah Abū ʿAmr in the pre-Islamic era. Then when she died, he married her sister Umm Kulthūm. Then she died, so he married Fākhitah bt. Ghazwān b. Jābir, and she bore him ʿUbaydullāh al-Aṣghar. He married Umm ʿAmr bt. Jundub b. ʿAmr al-Azdiyyah, and she bore him ʿAmr, Khālid, Abān, ʿUmar, and Maryam. He married Fāṭimah bt. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd Shams al-Makhzūmiyyah, and she bore him al-Walīd and Saʿīd. He married Umm al-Banīn bt. ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn al-Fizāriyyah, and she bore him ʿAbd al-Malik; and it is said: also ʿUtbah. He married Ramlah bt. Shaybah b. Rabīʿah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy, and she bore him ʿĀʾishah, Umm Abān, and Umm ʿAmr — the daughters of ʿUthmān. He married Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah b. al-Aḥwaṣ b. ʿAmr b. Thaʿlabah b. Ḥiṣn b. Ḍamḍam b. ʿAdī b. Janāb b. Kalb, and she bore him Maryam; and it is said: also ʿAnbasah. He was killed, ؓ, while he had four wives: Nāʾilah, Ramlah, Umm al-Banīn, and Fākhitah. And it is said that he divorced Umm al-Banīn while he was under siege.
