The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ كَانَتْ غَزْوَةُ مُعَاوِيَةَ حِصْنَ الْمَرْأَةِ مِنْ أَرْضِ الرُّومِ بِنَاحِيَةِ مَلَطْيَةَ . وَفِيهَا كَانَتْ غَزْوَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ الثَّانِيَةَ حِينَ نَقَضَ أَهْلُهَا الْعَهْدَ، وَفِيهَا كَانَ مَسِيرُ الْأَحْنَفِ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ وَفَتْحِ الْمَرْوَيْنِ، وَمَسِيرُ ابْنِ عَامِرٍ إِلَى نَيْسَابُورَ وَفَتْحِهَا، فِي قَوْلِ بَعْضِهِمْ، وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُ ذَلِكَ، وَفِيهَا كَانَتْ غَزْوَةُ قُبْرُسَ، فِي قَوْلِ بَعْضِهِمْ، وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُهَا مُسْتَوْفًى، وَقِيلَ إِنَّ فَتْحَهَا كَانَ سَنَةَ ثَمَانٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ سَنَةَ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَثَلَاثِينَ أَعَانَ أَهْلُهَا الرُّومَ عَلَى الْغُزَاةِ فِي الْبَحْرِ بِمَرَاكِبَ أَعْطُوهُمْ إِيَّاهَا، فَغَزَاهُمْ مُعَاوِيَةُ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ فَفَتَحَهَا عَنْوَةً فَقَتَلَ وَسَبَى، ثُمَّ أَقَرَّهُمْ عَلَى صُلْحِهِمْ وَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ أَلْفًا، فَبَنَوُا الْمَسَاجِدَ وَبَنَى مَدِينَةً. وَقِيلَ: كَانَتْ غَزْوَتُهُ الثَّانِيَةُ سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ. وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ: حَجَّ عُثْمَانُ بِالنَّاسِ، وَوُلِدَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ.
Translation
✧ Then the Year Thirty-Three Began In this year, Muʿāwiyah’s expedition against the fortress of al-Marʾah in the land of the Romans, in the region of Malaṭyah, took place. In it, the second expedition of ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd to Ifrīqiyah occurred, when its people broke the covenant. In it, according to some of them, al-Aḥnaf’s march to Khurāsān and the conquest of the two Marws, and Ibn ʿĀmir’s march to Naysābūr and its conquest, took place—the mention of that has preceded. In it, according to some of them, the expedition of Qubrus took place—its mention has preceded in full. It was said that its conquest was in the year twenty-eight. Then when the year thirty-two came, its people aided the Romans against the raiders at sea with ships they gave them. So Muʿāwiyah raided them in the year thirty-three, conquered it by force, killed and took captives, then confirmed them on their treaty and sent to them twelve thousand. They built mosques, and he built a city. It was said: His second expedition was in the year thirty-five. In this year: ʿUthmān led the people in pilgrimage. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ was born.
