The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
[ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ مُقَدَّمَانِ فِي الْخِلَافَةِ عَلَى غَيْرِهِمَا] قَالَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ: (مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا كَانَ أَحَقَّ بِالْوِلَايَةِ مِنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ.. فَقَدْ خَطَّأَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارَ). وَقَالَ شَرِيكٌ: (لَيْسَ يُقَدِّمُ عَلِيًّا عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ أَحَدٌ فِيهِ خَيْرٌ). وَقَالَ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ: (تَدْرُونَ مَنْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ؟ هُمَا أَبَوَا الْإِسْلَامِ وَأُمُّهُ). وَقَالَ جَعْفَرُ الصَّادِقُ: (أَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّنْ ذَكَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ إِلَّا بِخَيْرٍ).
Translation
✧ [Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ are given precedence in the caliphate over others] Sufyān al-Thawrī said: (Whoever claims that ʿAlī was more entitled to the authority than Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.. then he has declared Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, the Emigrants, and the Helpers to be in error). Sharīk said: (No one with any good in him gives precedence to ʿAlī over Abū Bakr and ʿUmar). Abū Usāmah said: (Do you know who Abū Bakr and ʿUmar are? They are the two fathers of Islam and its mother). Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq said: (I am innocent of anyone who mentions Abū Bakr and ʿUmar except with good).
