The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
Translation
✧ The Conquest of Qazwīn and Zanjān in the Year Twenty-Two When al-Mughīrah dispatched Jarīr to Hamadhān and he conquered it, he sent al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib with an army to Qazwīn, and ordered him to march to it; if he conquered it, he should raid al-Daylam from there, for their previous route of campaign had been from Dastabā. So al-Barāʾ marched until he came to Abhar, which is a fortress. They fought him, then they sought security, so he granted them security and made peace with them. Then he raided Qazwīn. When its people learned the news, they sent to al-Daylam seeking aid, and they promised them. The Muslims reached them, and they went out to fight them, while al-Daylam stood on the mountain without lending a hand. When the people of Qazwīn saw that, they sought peace upon the terms of Abhar. Some of the Muslims said: Al-Daylam knew, when war is waged, When Ibn ʿĀzib came with his army, That the polytheists' assumption is false. How many we cut through, in the darkness of deep night, Of rugged mountain and of barren plains. Al-Barāʾ raided al-Daylam until they paid him tribute, and he raided Jīlān and al-Ṭaylasān, and he conquered Zanjān by force. When al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah governed al-Kūfah, he raided al-Daylam, Jīlān, Mūqān, al-Babar, and al-Ṭaylasān, then returned.
