Translation
✧ The story of Yazdajird b. Shahriyār b. Kisrā who was the king of the Persians when Saʿd seized from his hands the city of his kingdom, the abode of his seat, the hall of his sovereignty, and the carpet of his counsel and his storehouses; he moved from there to Ḥulwān, then the Muslims came to besiege Ḥulwān and he moved to al-Rayy, and the Muslims took Ḥulwān, then al-Rayy was taken, so he moved from it to Aṣbahān, and Aṣbahān was taken, so he marched to Kirmān, and the Muslims aimed for Kirmān and conquered it, so he moved to Khurāsān and settled there. All this while the fire which he worshipped besides God traveled with him from town to town, and a house was built for it in every town in which it was kindled according to their custom; and he was carried by night in his journey to these lands on a camel with a howdah in which he slept. While he was one night in his howdah sleeping, they passed with him by a ford and wanted to wake him before it, lest he be startled when he awoke in the ford. When they woke him, he became very angry with them and reviled them, and said: You have deprived me of knowing the duration of the remaining of these people in these lands and elsewhere. I saw in this dream of mine that I and Muḥammad conversed privately before God, and He said to him: "Your kingdom is a hundred years." He said: "Increase me." He said: "Ten and a hundred." He said: "Increase me." He said: "Twenty and a hundred years." He said: "Increase me." He said: "Yours." And you woke me, so had you left me I would have known the duration of this community.
