The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
فِي سَنَةِ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ فُتِحَتْ دِمَشْقُ وقيل أَنَّ فَتْحَ دِمَشْقَ وَقَعَ فِي سَنَةِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ، وَلَكِنْ نَصَّ سَيْفٌ عَلَى مَا نَصَّ عَلَيْهِ الْجُمْهُورُ مِنْ أَنَّهَا فُتِحَتْ فِي نِصْفِ رَجَبٍ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَكَذَا حَكَاهُ الْحَافِظُ ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ مِنْ طَرِيقِهِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، قَالَ: فُتِحَتْ دِمَشْقُ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَرَوَاهُ دُحَيْمٌ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَشْيَاخًا يَقُولُونَ: إِنَّ دِمَشْقَ فُتِحَتْ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: بَلْ كَانَ فَتْحُهَا فِي شَوَّالٍ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَقَالَ خَلِيفَةُ: حَاصَرَهُمْ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ فِي رَجَبٍ وَشَعْبَانَ وَرَمَضَانَ وَشَوَّالٍ، وَتَمَّ الصُّلْحُ فِي ذِي الْقِعْدَةِ. وَقَالَ الْأُمَوِيُّ فِي " مُغَازِيهِ ": كَانَتْ وَقْعَةُ أَجْنَادِينَ فِي جُمَادَى الْأُولَى، وَوَقْعَةُ فِحْلٍ فِي ذِي الْقِعْدَةِ مِنْ سَنَةِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ. يَعْنِي: وَوَقْعَةُ دِمَشْقَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَقَالَ دُحَيْمٌ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ: حَدَّثَنِي الْأُمَوِيُّ أَنَّ وَقْعَةَ فِحْلٍ وَأَجْنَادِينَ كَانَتْ فِي خِلَافَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ مَضَى الْمُسْلِمُونَ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ، فَنَزَلُوا عَلَيْهَا فِي رَجَبٍ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ. يَعْنِي فَفَتَحُوهَا فِي سَنَةِ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ. وَكَانَتِ الْيَرْمُوكُ سَنَةَ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ، وَقَدِمَ عُمَرُ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ سَنَةَ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ.
Translation
✧ In the year fourteen, Damascus was conquered. It is said that the conquest of Damascus took place in the year thirteen, but Sayf specified what the majority specified, namely that it was conquered in the middle of Rajab of the year fourteen. Likewise, al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it from him on the authority of Yazīd b. ʿUbaydah, who said: Damascus was conquered in the year fourteen. Duḥaym narrated it from al-Walīd, who said: I heard elders saying that Damascus was conquered in the year fourteen. Some of them said: Rather, its conquest was in Shawwāl of the year fourteen. Khalīfah said: Abū ʿUbaydah besieged them in Rajab, Shaʿbān, Ramaḍān, and Shawwāl, and the peace agreement was completed in Dhū al-Qiʿdah. Al-Umawī said in his Maghāzī: The Battle of Ajnādayn was in Jumādā al-Ūlā, and the Battle of Fiḥl was in Dhū al-Qiʿdah of the year thirteen, meaning that the Battle of Damascus was in the year fourteen. Duḥaym said from al-Walīd: Al-Umawī narrated to me that the Battle of Fiḥl and Ajnādayn was during the caliphate of Abū Bakr. Then the Muslims proceeded to Damascus and encamped before it in Rajab of the year thirteen, meaning that they conquered it in the year fourteen. Al-Yarmūk was in the year fifteen, and ʿUmar came to Jerusalem in the year sixteen.
