The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death

Translation

✧ His ﷺ wanting to write a document for Abū Bakr, then not writing it Imām Aḥmad narrated from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that she said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill, he said to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr: “Bring me a shoulder blade or a tablet so that I may write for Abū Bakr a document so that there would be no disagreement concerning him.” When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān went to get up, he said: “Allah and the believers refuse that there be any disagreement concerning you, O Abū Bakr.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it with the wording: “I intended, or I wanted, to send for Abū Bakr and his son and make a covenant, lest speakers speak or wishers wish. Then I said: Allah refuses and the believers repel, or Allah repels and the believers refuse.” Muslim narrated it with the wording: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me during his illness: “Call for me Abū Bakr, your father, and your brother, so that I may write a document, for I fear that someone may wish or a speaker may say: ‘I am more entitled,’ while Allah and the believers refuse anyone but Abū Bakr.” It has also been reported that he wanted to write a document without mentioning Abū Bakr. In “Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī” and “Muslim” from the ḥadīth of Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, from his father, who said: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he told her to come back to him later. She said: “What do you think if I come and do not find you?”—as if she meant death. He said: “If you do not find me, then go to Abū Bakr.” It is apparent, and Allah knows best, that she said that to him ﷺ during the illness in which he died, may Allah’s blessings and ﷺ.
