A summary of the expeditions
✧ The expedition of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī in the aftermath of the killing of Khubayb Al-Wāqidī said: Ibrāhīm b. Jaʿfar narrated to me from his father and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿUbaydah, from Jaʿfar b. al-Faḍl b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Abī ʿAwn, and some of them added to others, they said: Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb had said to a group of Quraysh in Makkah: "Is there anyone who can assassinate Muḥammad? For he walks in the markets, and we would attain our vengeance." A man from the Arabs came to him and entered his house, and said to him: "If you equip me, I will go out to him until I assassinate him, for I am a guide of the way, skilled in it. With me is a dagger like the wing-feather of a vulture." He said: "You are our man." He gave him a camel and provisions, and said: "Conceal your affair, for I do not feel safe that someone may hear this and report it to Muḥammad." He said: The Arab said: "No one will know it." So he set out at night on his riding camel and traveled for five nights, and reached the outskirts of the ḥarrah on the morning of the sixth day. Then he went on asking about the Messenger of God ﷺ until he came to the muṣallā. Someone said to him: "He has gone to the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal." The Bedouin went out leading his riding camel until he reached the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, where he hobbled his camel. Then he went toward the Messenger of God ﷺ and found him in a group of his companions, speaking in his mosque. He entered, and when the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him, he said to his companions: "This man intends treachery, and God is a barrier between him and what he intends." He stood and said: "Which of you is Ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "I am Ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib." He went to lean over the Messenger of God ﷺ as if to whisper to him, but Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr pulled him and said: "Move away from the Messenger of God ﷺ." He pulled at the inside of his waist-wrapper, and there was the dagger. He said: "O Messenger of God, this is a traitor." The Bedouin's hands fell in despair, and he said: "My blood, my blood, O Muḥammad." Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr began to seize him by the collar, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Tell me the truth: what are you, and what brought you here? For if you tell me the truth, truth will benefit you, and if you lie to me, I have already been informed of what you intended." The Arab said: "Am I safe?" He said: "You are safe." So he told him the news of Abū Sufyān and what he had promised him. He ordered that he be detained with Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr. Then the next day he called for him and said: "I have granted you safety, so go wherever you wish, or is there something better for you than that?" He said: "What is it?" He said: "That you bear witness that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God." He said: "I bear witness that there is no god but God and that you are the Messenger of God. By God, O Muḥammad, I was not afraid of men, but as soon as I saw you my reason left me and I became weak. Then you were informed of what I intended, which I had kept ahead of the riders, and no one else knew of it. So I knew that you are protected and that you are upon the truth, and that the party of Abū Sufyān is the party of Satan." The Prophet ﷺ began to smile. He stayed for some days, then asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission and departed from him, and no mention was heard of him again. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī and to Salamah b. Aslam b. Ḥarīsh: "Go out until you come to Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, and if you find him off guard, kill him." ʿAmr said: So I and my companion went out until we came to the valley of Yaʾjaj, where we hobbled our camel. My companion said to me: "O ʿAmr, would you like us to go to Makkah, circumambulate the House seven times, and pray two rakʿahs?" I said: "I know Makkah better than a piebald horse, and if they see me they will recognize me. I know the people of Makkah: when evening comes they sit in their courtyards." But he insisted, so we went to Makkah, circumambulated seven times, and prayed two rakʿahs. When I came out, Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān met me and recognized me, and said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah!" He informed his father, and the people of Makkah were alerted to us. They said: "ʿAmr has not come for any good." ʿAmr had been a daring assassin in the pre-Islamic era. The people of Makkah gathered and assembled, and ʿAmr and Salamah fled. They went out in pursuit of them, and they climbed hard into the mountain. ʿAmr said: I entered a cave and hid from them until morning. They spent the night searching for us in the mountain, and God blinded them to the road to Madinah so that they could not find our camel. The next day at forenoon, ʿUthmān b. Mālik b. ʿUbayd al-Taymī came to cut grass for his horse. I said to Salamah b. Aslam: "If he sees us, he will alert the people of Makkah, for they have dispersed from us." He kept drawing near to the entrance of the cave until he looked down upon us. He said: I went out to him and stabbed him with my dagger a stab below the breast, and he fell and cried out, making the people of Makkah hear. They came after having dispersed. I entered the cave and said to my companion: "Do not move." They came to him and said: "Who killed you?" He said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī." Abū Sufyān said: "We knew he did not come for good." He was unable to tell them our location, for he was at his last breath, and he died. They were distracted from searching for us by their companion, and they carried him away. We stayed two nights in our place until we came out. My companion said: "O ʿAmr b. Umayyah, would you like us to take down Khubayb b. ʿAdī?" I said to him: "Where is he?" He said: "There he is, crucified, with guards around him." I said: "Give me time and move away from me. If you fear anything, head to your camel, mount it, go to the Messenger of God ﷺ, tell him the news, and leave me, for I know Madinah well." Then I rushed to him until I reached him and carried him on my back. I had not walked with him more than twenty cubits before they woke up and came out after me. I threw down the wooden cross, and I will never forget the sound of its falling—he means its noise—then I poured earth over him with my foot. I took the road to al-Ṣafrāʾ, and they gave up and returned. I could not be caught as long as I had breath. My companion went to the camel, mounted it, and came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. I went on until I looked down upon al-Ghamīm, Ghamīm Ḍajnān, and entered a cave with my bow, arrows, and dagger. While I was there, a man from Banū Bakr of Banū al-Dīl came, one-eyed and tall, driving sheep and goats. He entered the cave and said: "Who is the man?" I said: "A man from Banū Bakr." He said: "And I am from Banū Bakr." Then he reclined and raised his voice singing, saying: I am not a Muslim as long as I live, nor do I profess the religion of the Muslims. I said to myself: By God, I hope to kill you. When he slept, I rose against him and killed him the worst killing I ever killed anyone. Then I went out until I descended. When I reached level ground on the road, there were two men whom Quraysh had sent to spy out news. I said: "Surrender." One of them refused, so I shot him and killed him. When the other saw that, he surrendered, and I bound him tightly. Then I brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. When I arrived in Madinah, children who were playing saw me and heard their elders saying: "This is ʿAmr." The children rushed to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. I came to him with the man, having bound his thumbs with my bowstring. I saw the Prophet ﷺ laughing, and then he supplicated for good for me. Salamah's arrival was three days before ʿAmr's arrival. Al-Bayhaqī narrated it. It has been mentioned before that when ʿAmr took down Khubayb, he saw no remains or body of him, so perhaps he was buried at the place where he fell. And God knows best. This expedition was only added by Ibn Hishām to Ibn Isḥāq, and he related it in a manner similar to al-Wāqidī's account of it, but according to him the companion of ʿAmr b. Umayyah in this expedition was Jabbār b. Ṣakhr. So God knows best, and to God be praise.
