The Farewell Pilgrimage
Translation
✧ His ﷺ stopping at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah and spending the night there: He ﷺ traveled until he came to Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, which is part of Wādī al-ʿAqīq, and halted there. I say: beneath a samurah tree at the site of the mosque at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, short of the elevated ground, to the right of the road, as in the Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, so that his companions might gather to him, as mentioned by Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Aslamī, and Allah Most High knows best. He prayed the afternoon prayer there as two rakʿahs, which indicates that he came to al-Ḥulayfah during the day at the time of ʿaṣr and prayed ʿaṣr shortened. It is three miles from Madinah. Then he prayed maghrib and ʿishāʾ there and spent the night until morning, then prayed with his companions and informed them that revelation had come to him during the night concerning what he should adhere to in the state of iḥrām. As Imām Aḥmad said: Yaḥyā b. Ādam narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated to us, from Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, from Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ that he was approached at al-Muʿarras of Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, and it was said to him: 'You are in a blessed valley.' They both transmitted it in the two Ṣaḥīḥs from the ḥadīth of Mūsā b. ʿUqbah. Al-Bukhārī said: al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us, al-Walīd and Bishr b. Bakr narrated to us, they said: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, Yaḥyā narrated to us, ʿIkrimah narrated to me that he heard Ibn ʿAbbās say that he heard ʿUmar say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Wādī al-ʿAqīq saying: 'Tonight a messenger from my Lord came to me and said: Pray in this blessed valley and say: ʿUmrah in a ḥajj.' This is narrated only by him, not by Muslim. It is evident that he, peace and blessings be upon him, was commanded to pray in Wādī al-ʿAqīq, meaning to stay there until he prayed the noon prayer, because the command came to him at night, and he informed them after the dawn prayer, so only the noon prayer remained, and he was commanded to pray it there and to enter iḥrām after it. For this reason he said: 'Tonight a messenger from my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, came to me and said: Pray in this blessed valley and say: ʿUmrah in a ḥajj.' This has been used as evidence for the command to perform qirān in ḥajj, and it is one of the strongest proofs for that. The point is that he, peace and blessings be upon him, was commanded to remain in Wādī al-ʿAqīq until the noon prayer, and he, may Allah's prayers and ﷺ, complied with that. He stayed there and went around to his wives that morning. They were nine women, and all of them had gone out with him. He remained there until he prayed the noon prayer. I say: ʿĀʾishah perfumed him before he went around to them that night, and he performed ghusl, as related by Muslim from ʿĀʾishah, and by al-Bayhaqī from her; she said: 'I perfumed him with perfume.' And Allah Most High knows best. He drove his sacrificial animals with him. I say: he had them with him ﷺ before his arrival. He ﷺ called for his sacrificial camel—in one narration, his she-camel—and made an incision on the side of its hump on the right side, then wiped the blood from it, and garlanded it with two sandals. I say: he himself undertook the marking and garlanding of the rest of the sacrificial animals, while others did it for him. He said: he ﷺ had with him many sacrificial animals. Ibn Saʿd said: Nājiyah b. Jundub al-Aslamī was in charge of his sacrificial animals, and all the sacrificial animals he drove from Madinah were with him.
