The Farewell Pilgrimage

Translation

✧ The Farewell Pilgrimage in the year ten. It is called the Pilgrimage of Conveyance (ḥajjat al-balāgh), the Pilgrimage of Islam (ḥajjat al-islām), and the Farewell Pilgrimage (ḥajjat al-wadāʿ), because he ﷺ bade farewell to the people during it and did not perform ḥajj after it. It was named the Pilgrimage of Islam because he ﷺ did not perform any other ḥajj from Madinah, but he had performed ḥajj before the Hijrah several times before and after prophethood. It was named the Pilgrimage of Conveyance because he ﷺ conveyed to the people the law of Allah regarding the ḥajj in word and deed, and there remained nothing of the pillars and foundations of Islam except that he ﷺ had explained it. So when he clarified for them the law of the ḥajj, made it plain, and explained it, Allah, mighty and majestic, sent down upon him while he was standing at ʿArafah: This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as religion (al-Māʾidah: 3).
