✧ [The poetry of Labīd in mourning Arbad] Ibn Isḥāq said: Labīd said, mourning Arbad: Fate never passes over anyone, neither a compassionate father nor a child. I fear for Arbad the deadly fates, nor do I dread the storm of al-Simāk and al-Asad. O eye, why did you not weep for Arbad when we stood up and the women stood in grief? If they stir up discord, he cares not for their discord; or if they act justly in judgment, he acts justly. Sweet and shrewd, yet in his sweetness bitter, delicate in entrails and liver. O eye, why did you not weep for Arbad when the winter winds twisted the low trees? And she became pregnant then barren, until the remnants of the spans became clear. Braver than a fleshy lion of the thicket, with ambition in high matters and criticism. The eye does not attain all its ambition on the night when swift horses become like strips. He who stirs the wailing in his mourning gatherings, like the firstborn gazelles on the stony ground. The lightning and thunderbolts bereaved me of the rider on the day of fierce battle, the courageous one. The plunderer who mends the plundered one when he comes as a loser; and if he returns, he returns. He pardons despite hardship and begging, just as the spring rain of the watcher makes plants grow. All the sons of a free woman, their destiny is paucity, even if they increase in number. If they are envied, they fall; and if they are commanded one day, they are for destruction and depletion. Ibn Hishām said: His verse "the plunderer who mends the plundered one" is from Abū ʿUbaydah, and his verse "he pardons despite hardship" is from someone other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Labīd also said, mourning Arbad: Alas, the protector and defender has gone, and the repeller of her oppression on the day of dispute. I became certain of separation on the day they said, "Arbad's wealth has been divided by arrows." The shares of the snares fly off in pairs and singly, and the leadership goes to the boy. So he bade farewell with peace, Abū Ḥurayz; and how little was Arbad's farewell with peace. You were our leader and for us a system; and sorrow was guarded by the system. And Arbad was the rider of the fray when the thickets became hollowed by the crowds. When the women went early, riding behind, bareheaded, not coming to the veils. Then whoever came to him sought refuge, as the one in a state of consecration flees to the sanctuary. And the cooking-pot of Arbad is praised by whoever visits it, when the owners of the meat are blamed. And his neighbor woman, when she dwells near him, has a gift and a share of the hump. If you stay, you are an honored, chaste woman; and if you depart, you are one of beautiful speech. And have you been told of two brothers who lasted through the days except the two sons of Shamām? And except the two farqad stars and the bier's daughters, immortal, never reported to collapse. Ibn Hishām said: It is in a qaṣīdah of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: Labīd also said, mourning Arbad: Announce the noble one to the noble one, Arbad; announce the chief, the one delicate in liver. He gives sandals and gives his wealth to be praised; tanned hides that forever resemble a herd of wild cows. The one who precedes in virtue when it is counted; and he fills the bowl with a full, extended filling. Comfortable when a poor man comes to the water; like the one in the thicket who pursues frozen water. He increases in closeness to them when he is threatened; you have inherited from us a legacy not exhausted: a lasting bounty, newly acquired wealth, and offspring; young falcons, mature and beardless. And Labīd also said: You two will never exhaust the good deeds of Arbad, so weep for him until he returns. Say: he is the hero, the protector when they don the iron. And he repels from us the wrongdoers when we meet the people as hunters. Then the Lord of creation took him when He saw that there is no immortality. So he dwelt and was not pained nor afflicted, and he was the lost one. And Labīd also said: Every stubborn opponent reminds me of Arbad, whose plan you would think was harmful. When they act justly, he is a noble just one; and if they oppress, he is equal in right, an oppressor. He guides the people, looking out, when the people's guide in the desert becomes bewildered. Ibn Hishām said: Its last two verses are from someone other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Labīd also said: I have become walking after Salmā b. Mālik and after Abū Qays and ʿUrwah, like one with a severed tendon. When he sees the shadow of the crow, it startles him, fearing for the rest of the vertebrae and sinews. Ibn Hishām said: These two verses are among verses of his.
