Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations
كِتَابُ الْوُفُودِ الْوَارِدِينَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ . قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: لَمَّا افْتَتَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ وَفَرَغَ مِنْ تَبُوكَ وَأَسْلَمَتْ ثَقِيفٌ وَبَايَعَتْ، ضَرَبَتْ إِلَيْهِ وُفُودُ الْعَرَبِ مِنْ كُلِّ وَجْهٍ - قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ فِي سَنَةِ تِسْعٍ، وَأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تُسَمَّى سَنَةَ الْوُفُودِ - انْقِيَادُ الْعَرَبِ وَإِسْلَامُهُمْ قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: وَإِنَّمَا كَانَتِ الْعَرَبُ تَرَبَّصُ بِإِسْلَامِهَا أَمْرَ هَذَا الْحَيِّ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ ; لِأَنَّ قُرَيْشًا كَانُوا إِمَامَ النَّاسِ وَهَادِيَهُمْ، وَأَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَالْحَرَمِ، وَصَرِيحَ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَقَادَةَ الْعَرَبِ، لَا يُنْكِرُونَ ذَلِكَ، وَكَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ هِيَ الَّتِي نَصَبَتِ الْحَرْبَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَخِلَافَهُ. نُزُولُ سُورَةِ الْفَتْحِ فَلَمَّا افْتُتِحَتْ مَكَّةُ وَدَانَتْ لَهُ قُرَيْشٌ، وَدَوَّخَهَا الْإِسْلَامُ، عَرَفَتِ الْعَرَبُ أَنَّهُمْ لَا طَاقَةَ لَهُمْ بِحَرْبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَا عَدَاوَتِهِ، فَدَخَلُوا فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ - كَمَا قَالَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - أَفْوَاجًا، يَضْرِبُونَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ كُلِّ وَجْهٍ، يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى لِنَبِيِّهِ ﷺ: إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا ( النَّصْرِ: 1 - 3 ) أَيْ فَاحْمَدِ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا أَظْهَرَ مِنْ دِينِكَ، وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا. وَقَدْ قَدَّمْنَا حَدِيثَ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: وَكَانَتِ الْعَرَبُ تَلَوَّمُ بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ الْفَتْحَ فَيَقُولُونَ: اتْرُكُوهُ وَقَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ ظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَهُوَ نَبِيٌّ صَادِقٌ. فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ وَقْعَةُ أَهْلِ الْفَتْحِ بَادَرَ كُلُّ قَوْمٍ بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ، وَبَدَرَ أَبِي قَوْمِي بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ قَالَ: جِئْتُكُمْ وَاللَّهِ مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّبِيِّ حَقًّا، قَالَ: " صَلُّوا صَلَاةَ كَذَا فِي حِينِ كَذَا وَصَلَاةَ كَذَا فِي حِينِ كَذَا، فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ، وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْثَرُكُمْ قُرْآنًا ".
Translation
✧ The book of the delegations that came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Muhammad b. Ishaq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, finished with Tabuk, and Thaqif submitted and gave their pledge, delegations of the Arabs struck out toward him from every direction. Ibn Hisham said: Abu ʿUbaydah narrated to me that that was in year nine, and that it was called the Year of Delegations. The submission of the Arabs and their acceptance of Islam. Ibn Ishaq said: The Arabs had been waiting with regard to their acceptance of Islam for the affair of this clan of Quraysh, because Quraysh were the imams of the people and their guides, the people of the House and the Sanctuary, the pure descendants of Ismaʿil b. Ibrahim, and the leaders of the Arabs—they did not deny that. And it was Quraysh who had set up war against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and opposed him. The revelation of Surat al-Fath. So when Makkah was conquered and Quraysh submitted to him, and Islam tamed them, the Arabs knew that they had no strength to fight the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or to oppose him. So they entered the religion of Allah—as He, Mighty and Majestic, said—in crowds, striking out toward him from every direction. Allah Most High says to His Prophet ﷺ: When the help of Allah comes and the victory, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds, then glorify with praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance (al-Naṣr: 1–3). That is, praise Allah for what He has made manifest of your religion, and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance. We have already mentioned the hadith of ʿAmr b. Salamah. He said: The Arabs were waiting for the conquest with regard to their acceptance of Islam, saying: Leave him and his people; for if he prevails over them, he is a truthful prophet. When the event of the conquest occurred, every people hastened to accept Islam, and my father hastened with my people to accept Islam. When he arrived, he said: By Allah, I have come to you from the Prophet truly. He said: “Pray such-and-such prayer at such-and-such time, and such-and-such prayer at such-and-such time. When the prayer is due, let one of you call the adhan, and let the one among you who knows the most Qurʾan lead you.”
