What Has Been Reported Regarding the Arrival of the Thaqīf Delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Their Conversion
Translation
✧ On the authority of Aws b. Ḥudhayfah, who said: We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as part of the delegation of Thaqīf. He said: The allies alighted with al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lodged the Banū Mālik in a tent of his. Every night he would come to us after the evening prayer and speak to us while standing on his two feet, until he would shift from one foot to the other because of the length of standing. Most of what he spoke to us about was what he had encountered from his people, the Quraysh. Then he would say: “I do not forget, for we were weak and humiliated in Makkah. When we went out to Madinah, the fortunes of war alternated between us and them; we gained the upper hand over them, and they gained the upper hand over us.” When one night came and he was later than the time at which he used to come to us, we said: You have been late to us tonight. He said: “A portion of the Qur’an I recite came upon me, and I disliked coming until I completed it.” Aws said: I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: How do you divide the Qur’an into portions? They said: Three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, and the portion of the Mufaṣṣal by itself.
