Translation
✧ God, exalted be He, said in Sūrat al-Aʿrāf after the story of the people of Lūṭ: “And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, ‘O my people, worship God; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you a clear proof from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and the balance, and do not deprive people of their due, and do not cause corruption in the land after its reformation. That is better for you, if you are believers. And do not sit on every path, threatening and averting from the way of God those who believe in Him, seeking to make it crooked. And remember when you were few and He multiplied you. And observe how was the end of the corrupters. And if there should be a group among you who have believed in that with which I was sent, and a group that have not believed, then be patient until God judges between us. And He is the best of judges.’” Said the notables who were arrogant among his people, “We will surely expel you, O Shuʿayb, and those who have believed with you from our town, or you must return to our religion.” He said, “Even if we were unwilling? We would have fabricated against God a lie if we returned to your religion after God has saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that God, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon God we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who decide.” And the notables who disbelieved among his people said, “If you follow Shuʿayb, you will then indeed be losers.” So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone—those who denied Shuʿayb, as though they had never prospered therein. Those who denied Shuʿayb—it was they who were the losers. So he turned away from them and said, “O my people, I have certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you. So how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?” [al-Aʿrāf: 85–93]. He said in Sūrat Hūd, also after the story of the people of Lūṭ: “And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, ‘O my people, worship God; you have no deity other than Him. And do not diminish the measure and the balance. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, and indeed I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing Day. And O my people, fulfill the measure and the balance with justice, and do not deprive people of their due, and do not commit abuse in the land, spreading corruption. What remains with God is better for you, if you are believers. And I am not over you a guardian.’ They said, ‘O Shuʿayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship, or that we should refrain from doing with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the right-minded!’ He said, ‘O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord, and He has provided me with a good provision from Him? I do not intend to differ from you in that which I forbid you. I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through God. Upon Him I have relied, and to Him I turn. And O my people, let not [your] dissension from me cause you to be struck by the like of what struck the people of Nūḥ or the people of Hūd or the people of Ṣāliḥ. And the people of Lūṭ are not far from you. And ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate.’ They said, ‘O Shuʿayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and indeed we see you among us as weak. And were it not for your clan, we would have stoned you. And you are not to us one of might.’ He said, ‘O my people, is my clan mightier to you than God? And you have taken Him behind your backs. Indeed, my Lord encompasses what you do. And O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You will know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him, and who is a liar. And watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher.’ And when Our command came, We saved Shuʿayb and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us. And the wrongdoers were seized by the shout, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone, as though they had never prospered therein. Unquestionably, away with Madyan, as Thamūd was taken away” [Hūd: 84–95]. He said in al-Ḥijr, also after the story of the people of Lūṭ: “And indeed the companions of the thicket were wrongdoers. So We took retribution from them. And indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway” [al-Ḥijr: 78–79]. He, exalted be He, said in al-Shuʿarāʾ after their story: “The companions of the thicket denied the messengers, when Shuʿayb said to them, ‘Will you not fear God? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear God and obey me. And I do not ask you for it any reward. My reward is only upon the Lord of the worlds. Fulfill the measure and do not be of those who cause loss. And weigh with the straight balance. And do not deprive people of their due, and do not commit abuse in the land, spreading corruption. And fear Him who created you and the former generations.’ They said, ‘You are only one of the bewitched. And you are nothing but a human being like us. And indeed, we think you are among the liars. So cause fragments of the sky to fall upon us, if you are among the truthful.’ He said, ‘My Lord is most knowing of what you do.’ So they denied him, and the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a tremendous day. Indeed in that is a sign, and most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord—He is the Mighty, the Merciful” [al-Shuʿarāʾ: 176–191].
