The Expedition of Muʾtah
فَصْلٌ اسْتِقْبَالُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: فَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: فَلَمَّا دَنَوْا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ تَلَقَّاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالْمُسْلِمُونَ، قَالَ: وَلَقِيَهُمُ الصِّبْيَانُ يَشْتَدُّونَ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُقْبِلٌ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ، فَقَالَ: " خُذُوا الصِّبْيَانَ فَاحْمِلُوهُمْ وَأَعْطُونِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ". فَأُتِيَ بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، فَأَخَذَهُ فَحَمَلَهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ. قَالَ: وَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَحْثُونَ عَلَى الْجَيْشِ التُّرَابِ وَيَقُولُونَ: يَا فُرَّارُ، فَرَرْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ؟! قَالَ: فَيَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " لَيْسُوا بِالْفُرَّارِ، وَلَكِنَّهُمُ الْكُرَّارُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ. قَالَ الْإِمَامُ أَحْمَدُ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَدِمَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ تُلُقِّيَ بِالصِّبْيَانِ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ، وَإِنَّهُ قَدِمَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ فَسُبِقَ بِي إِلَيْهِ. قَالَ: فَحَمَلَنِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ جِيءَ بِأَحَدِ ابْنَيْ فَاطِمَةَ، إِمَّا حَسَنٌ وَإِمَّا حُسَيْنٌ، فَأَرْدَفَهُ خَلْفَهُ، فَدَخَلْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ ثَلَاثَةً عَلَى دَابَّةٍ وَثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَارَةَ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: لَوْ رَأَيْتَنِي وَقُثَمَ وَعُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ ابْنَيِ الْعَبَّاسِ وَنَحْنُ صِبْيَانٌ نَلْعَبُ، إِذْ مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ فَقَالَ: " ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ ". فَحَمَلَنِي أَمَامَهُ وَقَالَ لِقُثَمَ: " ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ ". فَجَعَلَهُ وَرَاءَهُ، وَكَانَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَحَبَّ إِلَى عَبَّاسٍ مِنْ قُثَمَ، فَمَا اسْتَحَى مِنْ عَمِّهِ أَنْ حَمَلَ قُثَمَ وَتَرَكَهُ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَسَحَ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلَاثًا. وَقَالَ كُلَّمَا مَسَحَ: " اللَّهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي وَلَدِهِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ: مَا فَعَلَ قُثَمُ ؟ قَالَ: اسْتُشْهِدَ. قَالَ: قُلْتُ: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالْخَيْرِ. قَالَ: أَجَلْ. وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ،، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ: أَتَذْكُرُ إِذْ تَلَقَّيْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَحَمَلَنَا وَتَرَكَكَ.
Translation
✧ Section: The Messenger of Allah's Reception of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: When they drew near to Madinah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims met them. He said: The children ran out to meet them, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approaching with the people on a mount. He said: “Take the children and carry them, and give me the son of Jaʿfar.” So ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar was brought to him, and he took him and carried him before him. He said: The people began to throw dust at the army, saying: “O fugitives! Did you flee in the path of Allah?!” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “They are not fugitives, but they are those who return to fight, if Allah wills.” Imam Aḥmad said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from a journey, he would be met by the children of his household. He returned from a journey, and I was brought to him before others. He said: He carried me before him. He said: Then one of the two sons of Fāṭimah, either Ḥasan or Ḥusayn, was brought, and he seated him behind him. We entered Madinah, three of us, on one mount. Wathanā Jaʿfar b. Khālid b. Sārah, that his father informed him that ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar said: If only you had seen me, Qutham, and ʿUbayd Allāh, the two sons of al-ʿAbbās, while we were children playing, when the Prophet ﷺ passed by on a mount and said: “Lift this one up to me.” So he carried me in front of him, and said to Qutham: “Lift this one up to me.” So he placed him behind him. ʿUbayd Allāh was dearer to ʿAbbās than Qutham, but he did not feel ashamed before his uncle that he carried Qutham and left him. He said: Then he wiped my head three times, and each time he wiped, he said: “O Allah, compensate Jaʿfar in his offspring.” He said: I asked ʿAbd Allāh: “What happened to Qutham?” He said: “He was martyred.” He said: I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best what is good.” He said: “Yes.” From ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Mulaykah, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr said to ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar: “Do you remember when we met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—I, you, and Ibn ʿAbbās?” He said: “Yes, he carried us and left you.”
