The Expedition of Muʾtah
[ تَنَبُّؤُ الرَّسُولِ بِمَا حَدَثَ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ مَعَ الرُّومِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَلَمَّا أُصِيبَ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي: أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ فَقَاتَلَ بِهَا حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا جَعْفَرٌ فَقَاتَلَ بِهَا حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا، قَالَ: ثُمَّ صَمَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَغَيَّرَتْ وُجُوهُ الْأَنْصَارِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَقَاتَلَ بِهَا حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَقَدْ رُفِعُوا إلَيَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ، عَلَى سُرُرٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَرَأَيْتُ فِي سَرِيرِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ ازْوِرَارًا عَنْ سَرِيرَيْ صَاحِبَيْهِ، فَقُلْتُ: عَمَّ هَذَا ؟ فَقِيلَ لِي: مَضَيَا وَتَرَدَّدَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بَعْضَ التَّرَدُّدِ، ثُمَّ مَضَى ثُمَّ أَخَذَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ اللِّوَاءَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ مِنَ الْأُمَرَاءِ، هُوَ أَمَّرَ نَفْسَهُ. ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُصْبُعَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِكَ فَانْصُرْهُ». فَمِنْ يَوْمِئِذٍ سُمِّيَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ «سَيْفَ اللَّهِ» وَقَالَ مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ: قَدِمَ يَعْلَى بْنُ مُنْيَةَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِخَبَرِ أَهْلِ مُؤْتَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: "إِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَخْبَرْتُكَ" قَالَ: أَخْبِرْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَأَخْبَرَهُ ﷺ خَبَرَهُمْ كُلَّهُ، وَوَصَفَهُمْ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ، مَا تَرَكْتَ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِمْ حَرْفًا وَاحِدًا لَمْ تَذْكُرْهُ، وَإِنَّ أَمْرَهُمْ لَكَمَا ذَكَرْتَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: " إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفَعَ لِيَ الْأَرْضَ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ مُعْتَرَكَهُمْ "
Translation
✧ [ The Prophet's foretelling of what happened to the Muslims with the Byzantines ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the people were struck down, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, according to what reached me: Zayd b. Ḥārithah took the banner and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr; then Jaʿfar took it and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ fell silent until the faces of the Anṣār changed; then he said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah took it and fought with it until he was killed as a martyr. Then he said: They were raised up to me in Paradise, as the sleeper sees, upon couches of gold, and I saw in the couch of ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah a deviation from the couches of his two companions. I said: What is this? It was said to me: They passed on, while ʿAbd Allāh tarried somewhat, then passed on. Then Khālid b. al-Walīd took the standard, though he was not one of the commanders; he appointed himself. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ raised his finger and said: "O God, he is one of Your swords, so grant him victory." From that day Khālid b. al-Walīd was called "the Sword of God." Mūsā b. ʿUqbah said: Yaʿlā b. Munyah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ with news of the people of Muʾtah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "If you wish, tell me, and if you wish, I will tell you." He said: Tell me, O Messenger of God. So he ﷺ told him all their news and described them to him. He said: By the One who sent you with the truth, you did not leave out a single letter of their account that you did not mention, and their affair was indeed as you described. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "God raised the earth for me until I saw their battlefield."
