The Expedition of Muʾtah
ذِكْرُ طَعْنِ الصَّحَابَةِ فِي إِمَارَةِ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ ؓ رَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ قَالَ: «بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ [بَعْضُ] النَّاسِ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ، وَقَالُوا: يَسْتَعْمِلُ هَذَا الْغُلَامَ عَلَى الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ بَعْدَ أَنْ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ: «قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكُمْ قُلْتُمْ فِي أُسَامَةَ، إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ، وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ بَعْدَهُ». وَعَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ؓ قَالَ: «بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَيْشَ الْأُمَرَاءِ وَقَالَ: «عَلَيْكُمْ زِيدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ زَيْدٌ فَجَعْفَرٌ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ جَعْفَرٌ فعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ » قَالَ: فَوَثَبَ جَعْفَرٌ ؓ وَقَالَ: [بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي] يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا كُنْتُ أَرْهَبُ أَنْ تَسْتَعْمِلَ عَلَيَّ زَيْدًا ) فَقَالَ: «امْضِ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي أَيَّ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ».
Translation
✧ Mention of the Companions' criticism of the leadership of Zayd b. Ḥārithah ؓ Al-Bukhārī narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar ؓ who said: “The Prophet ﷺ dispatched an expedition and placed Usāmah b. Zayd in command over them. Some of the people criticized his leadership and said: ‘He appoints this youth over the Muhājirūn.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said, after praising Allah and extolling Him: ‘It has reached me that you have spoken about Usāmah. If you criticize his leadership, you used to criticize the leadership of his father before. By Allah, he was indeed worthy of leadership, and he was indeed among the most beloved of people to me, and this one is indeed among the most beloved of people to me after him.’” And from Abū Qatādah ؓ who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched the army of commanders and said: ‘Your commander is Zayd b. Ḥārithah. If Zayd is struck down, then Jaʿfar; if Jaʿfar is struck down, then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah.’” He said: Jaʿfar ؓ leapt up and said: “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, I was not afraid that you would appoint Zayd over me.” He said: “Go forth, for you do not know which of that is better.”
