The Expedition of Muʾtah
غَزْوَةُ مُؤْتَةَ وَهِيَ سَرِيَّةُ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ، فِي نَحْوٍ مَنْ ثَلَاثَةِ آلَافٍ، إِلَى الْبَلْقَاءِ مِنْ أَرْضِ الشَّامِ. قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بَعْدَ قِصَّةِ عُمْرَةِ الْقَضِيَّةِ: فَأَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ بَقِيَّةَ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ - وَوَلِيَ تِلْكَ الْحِجَّةَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ - وَالْمُحَرَّمَ وَصَفَرًا وَشَهْرَيْ رَبِيعٍ، وَبَعَثَ فِي جُمَادَى الْأُولَى بَعْثَهُ إِلَى الشَّامِ، الَّذِينَ أُصِيبُوا بِمُؤْتَةَ، فَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْثَهُ إِلَى مُؤْتَةَ فِي جُمَادَى الْأُولَى مِنْ سَنَةِ ثَمَانٍ.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Muʾtah It is the raiding party of Zayd b. Ḥārithah, with about three thousand men, to al-Balqāʾ in the land of Syria. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said after the story of the compensatory ʿUmrah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Madinah for the remainder of Dhū al-Ḥijjah—and the polytheists oversaw that pilgrimage—and al-Muḥarram, Ṣafar, and the two months of Rabīʿ. In Jumādā al-Ūlā he dispatched his expedition to Syria, those who were struck down at Muʾtah. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched his expedition to Muʾtah in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year eight.
