The Expedition of Banu Lihyan
اخْتَلَفُوا فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ وَفِي أَيِّ سَنَةٍ كَانَتْ هَذِهِ الْغَزْوَةُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: كَانَتْ هَذِهِ الْغَزْوَةُ لِهِلَالِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ سَنَةَ سِتٍّ، وَصَحَّحَ شَيْخُهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ: أَنَّهَا فِي سَنَةِ سِتٍّ فِي رَجَبٍ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ فِي رِوَايَةِ الْبَكَّائِيِّ، وَسَلَمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ: عَلَى رَأْسِ سِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ فِي جُمَادَى الْأُولَى وَقَالَ فِي رِوَايَةِ يُونُسَ كَمَا ذَكَرَهُ الْحَاكِمُ: فِي شَعْبَانَ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ حَزْمٍ: الصَّحِيحُ أَنَّهَا فِي السَّنَةِ الْخَامِسَةِ، وَذَكَرَهَا بَعْضُهُمْ أَنَّهَا فِي السَّنَةِ الرَّابِعَةِ، وَجَزَمَ الذَّهَبِيُّ فِي تَارِيخِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَغَيْرُهُ مِنَ الْعُلَمَاءِ: بِأَنَّهَا فِي السَّادِسَةِ، وَصَحَّحَهُ فِي الْبِدَايَةِ.
Translation
✧ They differed regarding in which month and in which year this expedition took place. Ibn Saʿd said: This expedition was at the beginning of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year six, and his shaykh Muḥammad b. ʿUmar corrected that it was in the year six in Rajab. Ibn Isḥāq said in the narration of al-Bakkāʾī, and Salamah b. al-Faḍl: at the head of six months in Jumādā al-Ūlā. And he said in the narration of Yūnus as mentioned by al-Ḥākim: in Shaʿbān. Ibn Ḥazm said: The correct view is that it was in the fifth year, and some mentioned that it was in the fourth year. Al-Dhahabī asserted in Tārīkh al-Islām and other scholars: that it was in the sixth year, and he authenticated it in al-Bidāyah.
