The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five

Translation

✧ [The Killing of Ibn Akhtab and the Poetry of Ibn Jawwal About It] Huyayy b. Akhtab, the enemy of Allah, was brought, wearing a fustian robe of his—Ibn Hisham said: faqqāḥiyya is a kind of embroidered cloth—which he had slit on every side to the extent of a finger-joint (unmula) so that it would not be plundered from him, his hands tied to his neck with a rope. When he looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: 'By Allah, I do not blame myself for enmity toward you, but he whom Allah forsakes is forsaken.' Then he turned to the people and said: 'O people, there is no harm in Allah's decree: a book, a destiny, and a battle that Allah has written against the Children of Israel.' Then he sat down and his neck was struck. Jabal b. Jawwal al-Thaʿlabi said: By your life, Ibn Akhtab did not blame himself, But he whom Allah forsakes is forsaken. He strove until he gave his soul its full excuse, And he stirred up every restless one seeking glory.
