The Expulsion of Banu al-Nadir in the Year Four
Translation
✧ The story of ʿAmr b. Suʿdā al-Quraẓī when he passed by the dwellings of Banū al-Naḍīr, which had become desolate, with no caller and none to answer. Banū al-Naḍīr had been more noble than Banū Qurayẓah, until that moved him to Islam, and he made manifest the description of the Messenger of God ﷺ from the Torah. Al-Wāqidī said: Ibrāhīm b. Jaʿfar narrated to us, from his father, who said: When Banū al-Naḍīr departed from Madinah, ʿAmr b. Suʿdā came and went around their dwellings, and saw their ruin. He reflected, then returned to Banū Qurayẓah and found them in the synagogue. He blew their horn, and they gathered. Al-Zubayr b. Bāṭā said: O Abū Saʿīd, where have you been since today? We have not seen you. He used not to leave the synagogue, and he practiced devotion in Judaism. He said: Today I saw lessons by which we have been admonished. I saw the dwellings of our brothers empty after that might, toughness, surpassing nobility, and brilliant mind. They left their wealth, and others possessed it, and they departed in a departure of humiliation. No, by the Torah, this man has never been given power over a people for whom God had any need. He had previously fallen upon Ibn al-Ashraf, the man of their might, then made a night raid on him in his house while he was secure. He fell upon Ibn Sunaynah, their chief, and he fell upon Banū Qaynuqāʿ and expelled them. They were the people of the fortune of the Jews, and they were people of numbers, weapons, and courage. He besieged them, and not one of them put out his head until he took them captive, and intercession was made for them, and he left them on condition that he expel them from Yathrib. O my people, you have seen what you have seen, so obey me and come, let us follow Muḥammad. For by God, you know that he is a prophet. Ibn al-Haybān Abū ʿUmayr and Ibn Ḥirāsh, who were the most learned of the Jews, gave us good tidings of him and of his affair. They came to us from Bayt al-Maqdis expecting his arrival, and they commanded us to follow him, and they commanded us to convey to him peace from them. Then they both died upon their religion, and we buried them in this our volcanic tract. The people fell silent, and none of them spoke. Then he repeated this speech and the like of it, and he frightened them with war, captivity, and expulsion. Al-Zubayr b. Bāṭā said: By the Torah, I have read his description in the Book of Bāṭā; the Torah that was sent down upon Moses, not in the repetitions that we have invented. He said: Kaʿb b. Asad said to him: What prevents you, O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from following him? He said: You. Kaʿb said: Why? By the Torah, I have never come between you and him. Al-Zubayr said: Rather, you are the holder of our covenant and our pact. If you follow him, we follow him, and if you refuse, we refuse. So ʿAmr b. Suʿdā turned to Kaʿb, and he mentioned what they had said to one another about that, until Kaʿb said: I have nothing concerning his affair except what I said: my soul is not content to become a follower. Al-Bayhaqī narrated it.
