The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [The Burial of the Martyrs] Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the Muslims had carried their dead to Madinah and buried them there, then the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade that and said: “Bury them where they fell.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Thaʿlaba b. Ṣuʿayr al-ʿUdhrī, an ally of Banū Zuhra: that when the Messenger of God ﷺ looked over the slain on the day of Uḥud, he said: “I am a witness over these. There is no one wounded for God’s sake but God will raise him on the Day of Resurrection with his wound bleeding: the color is the color of blood, and the smell is the smell of musk. Look for the one among these who had gathered the most of the Qurʾān, and place him before his companions in the grave.” They used to bury two or three in a single grave. He said: My uncle Mūsā b. Yasār narrated to me that he heard Abū Hurayra say: Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ said: “There is no one wounded for God’s sake but God will raise him on the Day of Resurrection with his wound bleeding: the color is the color of blood, and the smell is the smell of musk.” Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh informed him that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to join two men of the slain of Uḥud in a single cloth, then say: “Which of them had taken more of the Qurʾān?” When one was indicated he placed him first in the laḥd and said: “I am a witness over these on the Day of Resurrection.” He ordered them to be buried with their blood, and he did not pray over them, and they were not washed. The burial of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām in a single grave Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me, from elders of Banū Salama: that the Messenger of God ﷺ said that day, when he ordered the burial of the slain: “Look at ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, for they were close friends in this world, so place them in a single grave.” [The burial of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh with Ḥamza] He said: The family of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh asserted to me—Ḥamza was his maternal uncle through Umayma bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he had been mutilated as Ḥamza had been mutilated, except that his liver was not cut out—that the Messenger of God ﷺ buried him with Ḥamza in his grave. I heard that only from his family. Al-Wāqidī mentioned that when Muʿāwiya wanted to run the spring, his herald called out: “Whoever has a slain one at Uḥud, let him attend.” Jābir said: “We dug them up, and I found my father in his grave as if he were asleep in his posture, and I found his neighbor in his grave, ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ, with his hand on his wound. It was removed from it, and his wound gushed blood.” It is said that from their graves wafted the like of the smell of musk, ؓ, and that was forty-six years after the day they were buried. Al-Wāqidī said: The Prophet ﷺ used to visit them every year, and when he came to the mouth of the mountain pass he would say: “Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured; how excellent is the final abode.” Then Abū Bakr used to do that every year, then ʿUmar, then ʿUthmān. Fāṭima bt. the Messenger of God ﷺ used to come to them and weep by them and pray for them. Saʿd used to greet them, then turn to his companions and say: “Will you not greet a people who return your greeting?” Then he related their visitation from Abū Saʿīd, Abū Hurayra, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, and Umm Salama ؓ. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Ibrāhīm narrated to me, al-Ḥakam b. Nāfiʿ narrated to me, al-ʿAṭṭāf b. Khālid narrated to us, my maternal aunt narrated to me, saying: “I rode one day to the graves of the martyrs—she used to visit them continually—and I dismounted by Ḥamza and prayed as long as God willed me to pray, and there was no caller or answerer in the valley, except a boy standing holding the head of my mount. When I finished my prayer, I said with my hand like this: ‘Peace be upon you.’ She said: I heard the reply of peace to me coming from beneath the earth, which I recognized as I recognize that God, Mighty and Majestic, created me, and as I recognize the night and the day, and every hair of mine stood on end.”
