The Expedition of Uḥud
وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَأُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَمُشَمِّرَتَانِ، أَرَى خَدَمَ سُوقِهِمَا، تُنْقِزَانِ الْقِرَبَ عَلَى مُتُونِهِمَا، تُفْرِغَانِهِ فِي أَفْوَاهِ الْقَوْمِ، ثُمَّ تَرْجِعَانِ فَتَمْلَآنِهَا، ثُمَّ تَجِيئَانِ فَتُفْرِغَانِهِ فِي أَفْوَاهِ الْقَوْمِ وَرَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَسَمَ مُرُوطًا بَيْنَ نِسَاءِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ، فَبَقِيَ مِنْهَا مِرْطٌ جَيِّدٌ، فَقَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَعْطِ هَذَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الَّتِي عِنْدَكَ - يُرِيدُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومِ بِنْتَ عَلِيٍّ - فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أُمُّ سُلَيْطٍ أَحَقُّ بِهِ، وَأُمُّ سُلَيْطٍ مِنْ نِسَاءِ الْأَنْصَارِ مِمَّنْ بَايَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ، قَالَ عُمَرُ: فَإِنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَزْفِرُ لَنَا الْقِرَبَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ. انْتَهَى. وَأُمُّ سُلَيْطٍ هَذِهِ وَالِدَةُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ.
Translation
✧ I saw ʿĀʾishah bt. Abī Bakr and Umm Sulaym, and they were indeed tucking up their garments, and I could see the anklets on their legs, carrying waterskins on their backs. They would pour them into the mouths of the people, then go back and fill them, then come again and pour them into the mouths of the people. Al-Bukhārī narrated from Thaʿlabah b. Mālik ؓ that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ distributed cloaks among the women of the people of Madinah. A good cloak remained, and one of those with him said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful, give this to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who is with you" - meaning Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿAlī. ʿUmar said: "Umm Sulayṭ is more entitled to it." Umm Sulayṭ was one of the women of the Anṣār who had given allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿUmar said: "She used to carry waterskins for us on the day of Uḥud." End. This Umm Sulayṭ is the mother of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī ؓ.
