✧ He used to like the palm stalks to hold them in his hand. One day he entered the mosque and in his hand was one of them. He saw sputum in the direction of the qiblah of the mosque, so he scraped them until he cleaned them. Then he turned to the people angrily and said: 'Would any of you like a man to face him and spit in his face? When one of you stands for prayer, he is facing his Lord, and the angel is on his right. So let him not spit in front of him nor to his right, but let him spit under his left foot or to his left. And if something forces him, let him spit like this into the edge of his garment.' And he folded part of it over another part.

machine translationIt is narrated by al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Dhubāb and Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān. There is disagreement about Ibn ʿAjlān: Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Khālid b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Mujabbir narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Nāfiʿ, from Abū Saʿīd. It is gharīb from al-Thawrī; he was singled out in narrating it from him, and it is an error (wahm). The correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd; the correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd.
