✧ We were on a journey heading to Kufa with the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. When we reached a distance of two or three nights' travel from Harura', some people broke away from us. We mentioned that to 'Ali, and he said: Do not be alarmed by their affair, for they will return. We halted. The next day, twice as many broke away. We mentioned that to 'Ali, and he said: Do not be alarmed by their affair, for their matter is insignificant. 'Ali said: Do not initiate fighting with them until they are the ones who initiate against you. They knelt on their knees, and we shielded ourselves with our shields. They began shooting us with arrows and bolts. Then they drew near to us and leveled their spears at us. Then they attacked us with swords, until they were about to put the swords to us. A man from 'Abd al-Qays called Sa'sa'ah ibn Suhan went out to them and called out three times. They said: What do you want? He said: I remind you of Allah, lest you go out in a land that becomes a disgrace upon the people of the earth. And I remind you of Allah, lest you depart from the religion as an arrow passes through the game. When we saw that they had put the swords to us, 'Ali said: Rise up with the blessing of Allah Almighty. It was only a short while of the day until we had laid low those we laid low and those who fled fled. 'Ali praised Allah and said: My close friend ﷺ told me: “The leader of these is a man with a deformed hand; on the nipple of his breast are small hairs like the tail of a jerboa. So search for him.” They searched for him but did not find him. We came to him and said: We did not find him. He said: Search for him, for by Allah, I have not lied nor been lied to. We kept searching for him until 'Ali himself came to the end of the battlefield that had been theirs. He kept saying: Turn over this one, turn over that one, until a man from Kufa came and said: Here he is. 'Ali said: Allah is Greatest. By Allah, no one will come to you telling you that his father was an angel. The people began saying: This is an angel, this is an angel. 'Ali said: Son of whom? They said: We do not know. Then a man from Kufa came and said: I am the most knowledgeable of people about this one. I was training a filly for so-and-so, son of so-and-so, an old man from Banu so-and-so, and I would put light saddlebags on her back and bring her back and forth. The filly bolted, and he called me: O boy, look, for the filly has bolted. I said: I see a phantom like a bucket or a sheep. Then this one appeared before us. He said: Who is the man? He said: A man from the people of Yamamah. He said: What has brought you, disheveled and pale? He said: I came to worship Allah in the prayer place of Kufa. He took him by the hand—there were only four of us, besides Allah—until he brought him to the house. He said to his wife: Allah Almighty has brought you good. She said: By Allah, I am in need of that; what is it? He said: This man, disheveled and pale as you see, came from Yamamah to worship Allah in the prayer place of Kufa. He worshiped Allah there and called the people until they gathered to him. 'Ali said: Indeed, my close friend ﷺ told me: “They are three brothers from the jinn; this is the eldest of them, the second has a large following, and the third has weakness.” Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, included the hadith of the deformed one in abridged form in the authentic collection, but they did not include it with this wording. “Its chain is authentic.”
