✧ I used to come to Madinah and meet some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah. The one I most loved to meet was Ubayy b. Kaʿb. I arrived in Madinah during the time of ʿUmar. They established the dawn prayer, and ʿUmar came out with some men. A man among the people looked at the faces of the people, recognized them, and did not recognize me. He pushed me and stood in my place. I prayed without understanding my prayer. When he finished, he said, “O my son, may Allah not grieve you. I did not do what I did out of ignorance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, ‘Be in the row that is nearest to me.’ I looked at the faces of the people and recognized them except you.” Then he sat down. I have never seen men stretch their necks toward something as they did toward him, and behold, it was Ubayy b. Kaʿb. Among what he said was: “The people of the covenant have perished, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah. The people of the covenant have perished, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah. By Allah, I do not grieve for them; I only grieve for the Muslims they destroyed.”
