✧ A man said, "O Mother of the Believers, tell us a hadith about the earthquake." She turned her face away from him. Anas said, "So I said to her, 'Tell us, O Mother of the Believers, about the earthquake.'" She said, "O Anas, if I tell you about it, you will live sad and be resurrected, when you are resurrected, with that sadness in your heart." I said, "O mother, tell us." She said, "Indeed, when a woman takes off her clothes in other than her husband's house, she tears the veil between herself and Allah ﷻ. And if she perfumes herself for other than her husband, it will be fire and disgrace upon her. So when they deem fornication lawful, drink wine after that, and strike musical instruments, Allah becomes jealous in His heaven and says to the earth: 'Quake with them.' If they repent and desist, then fine; otherwise, He will collapse it upon them." Anas said, "As punishment for them?" She said, "As mercy, blessing, and admonition for the believers, and as a deterrent, wrath, and punishment for the disbelievers." Anas said, "After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I have never heard a hadith that made me happier than this one. Rather, I live glad and will be resurrected, when I am resurrected, with that gladness in my heart—or he said, 'in my soul.'"
