أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزَّاهِدُ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَرُومَةَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ عَنْ هُزَيْلِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ

«إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ كَثِيرٍ عُلَمَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٍ خُطَبَاؤُهُ كَثِيرٍ مُعْطُوهُ الصَّلَاةُ فِيهَا قَصِيرَةٌ وَالْخُطْبَةُ فِيهَا طَوِيلَةٌ فَأَقْصِرُوا الْخُطْبَةَ وَأَطِيلُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ لَسِحْرًا وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الْآخِرَةَ أَضَرَّ بِالدُّنْيَا وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الدُّنْيَا أَضَرَّ بِالْآخِرَةِ يَا قَوْمُ فَأَضِرُّوا بِالْفَانِيَةِ لِلْبَاقِيَةِ»

✧ You are in a time in which its scholars are many, its orators are few, its givers (of charity) are many, and the prayer in it is short while the sermon is long. So shorten the sermon and lengthen the prayer. Indeed, some eloquence is magic. Whoever desires the Hereafter harms the worldly life, and whoever desires the worldly life harms the Hereafter. O people, harm the perishable for the sake of the everlasting.
