حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْفَقِيهُ أَنْبَأَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْحَرْبِيُّ ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ثنا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ
كُنْتُ أُرَاهُ يُقَدِّمُ فِتْيَانًا مِنْ فَتَيَانِ قَوْمِهِ فَيُصَلُّونَ بِهِ فَقُلْتُ أَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَكَ مِنَ الْفَضْلِ وَالسَّابِقَةِ تُقَدِّمُ هَؤُلَاءِ الصِّبْيَانَ فَيُصَلُّونَ بِكَ أَفَلَا تَتَقَدَّمُ وَتُصَلِّي لِقَوْمِكَ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ الْإِمَامَ ضَامِنٌ فَإِنْ أَتَمَّ كَانَ لَهُ وَلَهُمْ وَإِنْ نَقَصَ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وَلَا عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَحَمَّلَ ذَلِكَ»
Translation

✧ I used to see him put forward young men from the youth of his people and they would lead him in prayer. I said: You are the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you have virtue and precedence, yet you put forward these boys and they lead you in prayer? Will you not come forward and lead your people? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The imam is a guarantor. If he completes it, it is for him and for them, and if he falls short, it is upon him and not upon them. So I do not want to bear that.
