✧ By Allah, we were about to depart for the land of Abyssinia. Amir had gone for some of our needs when Umar b. al-Khattab approached and stood over me while he was still upon his polytheism. We used to suffer hardship and severity from him. He said: Is it departure, O Umm Abdullah? I said: Yes, by Allah, we will surely go forth in Allah's land. You have harmed us and oppressed us until Allah grants us a way out. He said: May Allah accompany you. I saw in him a tenderness I had never seen before. Then he left, and I could see that our departure had saddened him. Then Amir b. Rabi'a came back from that errand, and I said: O Abu Abdullah, if only you had seen Umar just now, his tenderness and his sadness for us. He said: Do you hope for his Islam? I said: Yes. He said: The one you saw will not embrace Islam until the camel of al-Khattab embraces Islam. He said this out of despair for him, because of the harshness and severity he used to see from him toward Islam.
