✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he saw me, I heard him say: “This is the chief of the people of the desert.” When I dismounted, I came to him and began speaking to him. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, what wealth is there for which I will not bear any consequence from a guest who stays with me or from numerous dependents?” He said: “What an excellent wealth is forty, and the most is sixty, and woe to the owners of hundreds except the one who gives in its abundance and its fatness, lends its back, and feeds the contented and the beggar.” I said: “O Prophet of Allah, how noble and how excellent are these character traits! O Prophet of Allah, may the valley in which I live not be settled by the abundance of my camels.” He said: “Then what do you do?” I said: “They count the camels and they count the people, and whoever wishes takes the head of a camel and goes away with it.” He said: “Then what do you do with lending their backs?” I said: “I do not lend the young or the old worn-out she-camel.” He said: “Is your wealth more beloved to you or the wealth of your heirs?” I said: “My wealth is more beloved to me than the wealth of my heirs.” He said: “Indeed, you have from your wealth what you eat and consume, or what you wear and wear out, or what you give and send forth; otherwise it is for your heirs.” I said: “By Allah, if I remain, I will indeed exhaust their number.” Al-Ḥasan said: “By Allah, he did so. When death came to Qays, he enjoined his sons, saying: ‘Beware of asking, for it is the last earning of a man. No one asks except that he leaves his earning.’”
