✧ I witnessed Qays ibn ʿĀṣim at his death while he was making his will. He gathered his sons, and they were thirty-two males. He said: “O my sons, when I die, make the eldest of you your leader, and you will succeed your fathers. Do not make the youngest of you your leader, lest that bring you disgrace among your peers. Do not set up a wailing woman for me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid wailing. And maintain your wealth, for it is an honor for the noble and a means of independence from the vile. Do not give away the necks of camels without their due, and do not withhold them from their due. Beware of every vein of evil, for whatever pleases you one day, what will grieve you is greater. And beware of the sons of your enemies, for they are enemies to you on the path of their fathers. When I die, bury me in a place that this quarter of Bakr ibn Wāʾil cannot overlook, for there were scratches between me and them in the pre-Islamic era, and I fear they will dig me up from my grave, so you will corrupt their world and they will corrupt your hereafter.” Then he called for his quiver and ordered his eldest son—who was called ʿAlī—and said: “Take out an arrow from my quiver.” He took it out. He said: “Break it.” He broke it. Then he said: “Take out two arrows.” He took them out. He said: “Break them.” He broke them, but he could not break them. He said: “O my son, thus are you in unity, and thus are you in division.” Then he began to recite: [light meter] “Glory is only what the truthful father built and the offspring revived his deeds. Glory, courage, and forbearance suffice when adorned by chastity and generosity. Thirty, O my sons, when you bind covenants for calamities, are like thirty arrows; when a strong knot binds them for time, they are not broken, even if the other arrows are cut apart; scattering destroys their gathering. Those of age and honor are more worthy, even if leadership among you is theirs. Upon you is care for the young, until the youngest reaches the utmost of his effort.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
