✧ Zayd ibn Saʿnah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out one day from the apartments, and with him was Ali ibn Abi Talib. A man came to him on his mount, like a Bedouin, and said: O Messenger of Allah, the village of Busra of Banu So-and-so has embraced Islam and entered into Islam. I had told them that if they embraced Islam, provision would come to them abundantly. A year of drought, hardship, and lack of rain has befallen them. I fear, O Messenger of Allah, that they may leave Islam out of greed just as they entered it out of greed. If you see fit to send them something to help them, do so. A man beside him, whom I think was Ali, looked at me and said: O Messenger of Allah, nothing of it remains. Zayd ibn Saʿnah said: I approached him and said: O Muhammad, will you sell me a known amount of dates from the orchard of Banu So-and-so, to be delivered at such-and-such a time? He said: "No, O Jew, but I will sell you a known amount of dates to be delivered at such-and-such a time, and I will not specify the orchard of Banu So-and-so." I said: Yes. He made a deal with me. I loosened my money belt and gave him eighty mithqals of gold for a known amount of dates to be delivered at such-and-such a time. He gave it to the man and said: "Be fair to them and help them with it." Zayd ibn Saʿnah said: When it was two or three days before the due date, I came to him and grabbed the collar of his shirt and his cloak, looked at him with a harsh face, and said: Will you not pay me my due, O Muhammad? By Allah, I have known you, O Banu Abd al-Muttalib, as poor at repaying debts, delaying. I have had experience of mixing with you. I looked at Umar, and his eyes were rolling in his face like a revolving sphere. Then he looked at me and said: O enemy of Allah, do you say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what I hear and do to him what I see? By the One who sent him with the truth, were it not for what I fear of his strength, I would strike your head with my sword. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at Umar with calm and deliberation, then smiled and said: "O Umar, he and I were in greater need of something other than this: that you command me to pay well and command him to demand well. Take him, O Umar, and give him his due, and add twenty saʿs of dates." I said: What is this increase, O Umar? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to increase you in place of my harshness toward you. I said: Do you know me, O Umar? He said: No, who are you? I said: Zayd ibn Saʿnah. He said: The rabbi? I said: The rabbi. He said: What made you do to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what you did and say to him what you said? I said: O Umar, there was no sign of prophethood that I did not recognize in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when I looked at him except two that I had not tested in him: "Does his forbearance overcome his ignorance, and does the intensity of ignorance against him only increase him in forbearance?" I have now tested them. I call you to witness, O Umar, that I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as Prophet. And I call you to witness that half of my wealth—for I am the wealthiest of them—is charity for the community of Muhammad ﷺ. Umar said: Or for some of them, for you cannot encompass them all. I said: Or for some of them. Zayd returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. He believed in him, affirmed him, pledged allegiance to him, and witnessed with him many battles. Then Zayd died in the expedition of Tabuk, advancing, not retreating. May Allah have mercy on Zayd.
