✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah upon his return from al-Ta'if, Bujayr b. Zuhayr b. Abi Salma wrote to his brother Ka'b b. Zuhayr b. Abi Sulma, informing him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ "had killed men in Makkah who had satirized and harmed him," and that the remaining poets of Quraysh — Ibn al-Ziba'ra and Hubayra b. Abi Wahb — had fled in every direction. "So if you have any need for yourself, hasten to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for he does not kill anyone who comes to him repentant. But if you do not do so, then save yourself by any means of escape." Ka'b had composed some verses in which he had spoken against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so much so that they were reported from him and became well-known. What he said was: "Will you two convey a message from me to Bujayr? And woe to you, is there any good in what I said? You told me — though I was not going to do it — upon what basis, woe to you, did someone other than you guide you? To a created being for whom you will find neither mother nor father, and you will not find a father for yourself upon him. If you do not do it, you will not be regretful, nor will you say, when you stumble, 'May he be raised!' With it the trusted one gave you a satisfying cup to drink, and the trusted one made you drink from it and gave you a second draught." He said: Ka'b only said "the trusted one" because Quraysh used to call the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that. When this reached Ka'b, the earth became constrained for him, he feared for his life, and his enemies among those present began to spread rumors about him, saying, "He is as good as killed." When he found no way out, he composed his ode in which he praises the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned his fear and the rumors the slanderers spread about him. Then he set out until he arrived in Madinah and stayed with a man from Juhayna with whom he had an acquaintance, as was mentioned to me. The man brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he had prayed the morning prayer, and he prayed with the people. Then he pointed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; go to him and ask for protection." It was mentioned to me that he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed his hand in his, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recognize him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, Ka'b b. Zuhayr has come to ask for your protection, repentant and Muslim. Will you accept him if I bring him to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am Ka'b b. Zuhayr." [Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis]
